when I run regedit the message says," cannot find file or one one of its components" . When I double-click the backup, I get the same message.

Have you scanned your machine with latest virus definitions?

Have you performed a search for regedit.exe? If missing, you cannot access the registry.
It may be missing or corrupt.
I would use SFC to extract a fresh copy of regedit.exe from the install disk, or the cabs on the hard drive if you use a restore disk. You need to put this fresh copy of regedit.exe in C:\windows
Here's a link to a site with screen shots and directions in the event you are not familiar with System File Checker, SFC.

If you have a restore disk you cannot use it. The restore from location will instead be:
C:\windows\options\cabs

I too am recommending a virus scan be run.
The symptom is an indication of an older virus but your AV software would have to be pretty outdated not to have caught it.
Replacing the lost .exe will make it so that you can include fixing the registry as part of the process of getting rid of the offending virus.
(Love Letter virus comes to mind)

Use Reghaker's tweak.
Copy regedit.exe to the c:\ drive
rename the copied file to regedit.com
execute regedit.com

Thanks to all who responded. I have since identified the culprit - "Klez" virus. Since Mcafee won't work anymore, I am forced to reinstall after backing up 25 gigs. But I still love the human race-- ;)

If you haven't done anything yet you may want to check out the virus section of this forum. On the left are links to specific virus information, including how to remove them. klez is included.
Cheers
