I was wondering if it is possible to network two computers using modems at home, using phone cable connected directly from one computer to another. I know that it is possible to do this with two phones and a battery.

Use proxy server!!
go to www.download.com and search for proxy server, it's pretty good.
However, due to 56k modem line, it will be slower on other machine.
U just run the software in one machine, the other one uses 192.168.0.whatever you assign to the network card. You do need two netward cards though.

Acutally if you have a cablemodem, why use phone line? Again, if you see phone line as a backup, proxy server is a solution.
Of course, when you talk about network, always get a network card for each computer.
then use a cross over cable, then those computers can talk.
