service pack update complications (W98)

I went to download an IE update and selected the wrong service pack -- Now when my computer starts, an Registry Editor error message appears... "Can not import C:\Windows\sp.reg Error opening the file". I have tried to install the correct IE but it will not install. I have been advised to edit my registry, but I am not sure how to proceed. ANy advise would be greatly appreaciated. Thank you.

Go to Start>Run, and type msconfig and uncheck the sp entry.

I'd suggest you download and run Ad-Aware to remove spyware on your system:
