I have a windows 2000 machine that many users logon. I am trying to do the following:

- Once a new user signs on the machine and launch IE, I want IE to take them to a default URL that I want to set for them. I tried going to the HKLM Main key and changing the start page, that didn't work (of course I restarted in case you're wondering). How can I have this done?

- Can I have common favorites to all of them? I have created the common favorites and copied them to the ALL USERS Favorites folder, but that did not help. How can I do that?

- Finally, I am also looking to have this machine to always have a Default Network Printer for users/new users. The users are computer illiterate, and having them do this on their own is a major project to them.

You did not read the post closely. I tried what you suggested and it did not work, and since it's a Win2k question, I decided to post it here to.
Thanks.

It was a question and I wasn't completely sure - don't bite my head off!

Start->Run->gpedit.msc

Under User Config
->Internet Explorer Maintenance

From there you can set several variables for IE, including a custom homepage.

You can also add in your own links that would appear in the users favorites. However, I don't think there is a way for the multiple favorites to interact as one.

You could also set up a profile exactly the way you want it and then copy all of the reg settings to the default/all user. I haven't done anything like this, but someone I know has and with some success.

You also could use the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) to create your own customized install with customized start page, home page, favorites, etc.

What you can do is to set up an default user profile with these settings (includes also printers).

1. Create a local user account with administrator rights and logon on as this user

2. Customize this profile with the setting you want

3. Logon as administrator and right-click on "My Computer". choose "Properties" > "User Profiles"

4. Select the user profile of the user you created in step 1 and choose "Copy to..."

5. Browse to "C:\Documents and Settings\Default Users" and click "Ok". If you cannot see this folder, you have first to enable the view of hidden files and folders

6. Change the user under "Permitted to use" to everyone

That's all, from now on each new user that will logon the first time to the computer will have the same settings.
