Hello,

I recently was infected with a virus and had to re-install windows 98. Have had some problems getting back on the internet and have tried many different things to get it working again.

However, my main problem is when I start windows 98, it first runs through the command lines and all I get is garbled characters and "files not found" errors and loud beeps and then the computer finally boots up. Can someone explain to me the bootlog sequence? What files does windows look at to start the computer and how can I replace them as they are corrupted at this point. I have tried re-installing windows a few more times but I still get the same errors at start-up. The good news is I can still access windows after this and everything works, except the internet. YET!

Thanks for your advice,

If you installed Windows over itself, the virus might still be there. You have to clean out the partition windows is on (C: if you have only one partition). One way is with the "FORMAT" command.

Better to get a good anti-virus program. I use Grisoft AVG:
