Upon startup Windows begins to load (I see the blue Win98 screen) then it goes to a black screen ans says" Can not locate system.ini file. May need to run Windows set-up " or soemthing to that effect, and then turns off. Just keeps doing this. I put a Windows 98 CD Rom in the disk drive and tried to re-run setup but it when I try to run set-up it says it is I already have an operating system installed and this is not an upgrade and exits. I have some very important files on my computer that I don't want to lose so I'm not sure what my nect step is. Is there somewhere I can find that system.ini file and install it to my computer through DOS? (I cannot access Windows) I tried finding the file on my Windows CD but I couldn't find it. Sorry if this is confusing. I'm only slightly more than a beginner with computer operating systems. Thanks in advance for anyones suggestions!

You can extract a recent system.ini file from one of the rbxxx.cab files in the windows\sysbckup folder (the folder is hidden by default). Boot to dos and type extract /? for the correct syntax.
or you can recover a recent copy of system.ini by booting to the dos menu (hit the F8 key just before windows starts to load). Type scanreg at the c:\ prompt.
restore a recent backup.
