I have win ME installed on two brand new computers. A Dell 1.3 GHz and a ProStar notebook at 1.0 GHz. Over the six months I have had them I have formatted the hard drives and reinstalled the software at least 3 times on both machines. The only things I really know how to do other than format and reinstall the software is run scan disk, check for viruses, uninstall unnecessary software defrag ect. None of these things really help. I ran the auto clean tool in RegCleaner (they suggest manually fixing the registry but I really have no clue what I am even looking at). Some of you might think that I deserve to be flamed for asking such a non technical question but even you had to start software. Is win ME just a lost cause? I am quite angry because I spend so much dam money for a computer that I spend more time restarting and reinstalling software than I do actually getting work done much less play a game over the internet but that’s a whole other world of trouble in it's self. I know my question is quite ambiguous but I could use some basic suggestions from people who have been there and done that.

A better question would be what is not wrong with your computer and note book. If ether computer is left running for over 5 hours it starts acting up I wish there was just one specific problem but there are many. Programs constantly quit responding, sometimes it says there is a connection error with the printer and 10 min later the connection is fine. All my hardware is straight and all my cables/connections are secure. It is just one thing after the other until it freezes and I have to shut the power off. I wish I could be more specific but that’s why the problem has been so difficult for me to try to solve. But the one thing that usually works is restarting the machine and most every thing is running fine after the restart but if the computer is used for any amount of time much less a couple of days w/o being restarted the problems begin. I guess the best method to solving this type of problem is by process of elimination of the possible causes. So maybe someone could post a list of common causes for errors, freezes ect. Along with what typically fixes each problem. Then I could narrow down the possible cause of the problem. Is there some freeware that can help??? Thanks for posting acymlf

is your CPU properly cooled? a heated up processor can actually cause the PC to hang and cause all sorts of other problem.

did u overclock the processor? or is the memory faulty?

have u tried installing other OS such as Win2K, 98 or XP? does it give the same problem?

If i have overclocked i am not aware of it. And i am having problems with both computers so i am pretty shure it is a problem with Win Me. Unfortunatly currently Win Me is the only OS i have access to. As we speak i am downlading a cracked version of Win XP but i only have a 56K connection and i seriously doubt the person i am downloading from with Direct Connect Is going to stay on for another 34 hours.

I really have only one piec of advice. GET RID OF WINDOWS ME. It's rubbish. I had it for three months on my self built PC (It seemed OK for games etc) but then....the microsoft ineviable KABOOM crashing hanging refusing to do anything without complaining. I formatted it and re-installed windows XP pro. Now my pc is faster and doesn't crash as much. Plus i love all the security and networking tools (TECHY). So dump ME and invest in a new OS. It'll cost a bit but save you a lot of time. Try windows 98. There may be bugs but it'll run smoothly if you know how to keep it in check.

stacks=9,256 is already in myconfig.sys under [common] Has anyone had any luck explaining to Microsoft or the place they bought there computer how much win Me basically sucks and getting a refund or an upgrade to xp or crist even a downgrade to win 98. I think it is really bad business selling someone a lemon but hay there Microsoft they they can do anything they want. Usually I am for government staying out of business (and everything and most every other aspect of our lives for that matter) but Microsoft has us all over a barrel. Maybe one of you will develop a kick *** OS and end this Microsoft monopoly. I hate to be pessimistic but I don’t think that’s gona happen any time soon. Maybe if all the hackers would unite and royally F***k Microsoft over where it cant even function then we might get some ware. And I am not talking a bought [censored] hacker [censored] I mean screwing up the Microsoft stock at the NYSE, transferring all of Bill Gates assets to various charities ect. Well I am finished with my rant and am doing my part to bring down microsoft by getting win XP from a peer 2 peer network. If I have to I will reinstall will reinstall the OS every day before I pay them one cent.

I posted a few hours ago but the mods didn't let it fly. Don’t you just love censorship :-) The stack thing is already in my config.sys under [common]. I am going to have to agree with scranman that Microsoft sold everyone a lemon called win ME. There is a lemon law for used cars why not exceptionally buggy software. I mean everyone and there mother knows win ME is a piece. I am going to call Microsoft and try to get an up grade or something. So wish me luck. If anything else it will feel good to let off some steam.
