Hi!

After installing a video-program, and then removing it
when trying to play ANY mpeg / divx mediaplayer just sits there does nothing! And dont tell me to install divx-codex's. It wont even play mpeg-1's.
..Sometimes an error-box appears, which says says that the mci is currupt (or something, dont remember what it was called).

I have tried to remove and reinstall mediaplayer 7.1 several times, but the problem persisits-
I've tried to run repair windows, but it doesnt find anything.

I guess that i need to repair some files within windows, or maybe the registry but i don't know how to do that.
...please! I dont want to reinstall all of windows again!
Im so tired of doing that :(
Is there anyway I could go into cab's and replace all files that has anything to do with mediaplayer ?
Anyone ?
Anything ?
I'm slowly but surely going crazy...

(Im using windows 98)
Thanks for any help ! :)

Hi,

I don't quite understand; are you trying to get rid of divx or are you trying to make it work?

Also, I downloaded WMP 7.1 but did not install it because it can lead to conflicts if...

Unfortunately, I forgot the rest of the sentence. I know that I'm not supposed to install it on this system (also win98) but I forgot why; conflicts with other software/drivers probably. Don't remember which though.

It doesent work at all. I can't watch ANY kind of mpeg/divx/video. It just never starts to play... just shoving 'connecting'. I've also tried to install other players, but every players seems to use some system resource that is corrupted.

I just want it to work.

What I would do..
Uninstall every media-related application on my PC, followed by maually cleaning up registry entries: just looking for the name of all the removed applications and deleting every entry they left in the registry (make sure to back up your registry before doing this!). Then I would run automated registry cleaners, which will clean up all the entries which I can't see myself (because they're a bunch of numbers instead words- the name of the app). (jv16 PT and MS Regclean,..)

Then I'd go to the microsoft update site, which will give you a bunch of updates you probably never thought you needed. Also install DirectX version 8.1

If you have a way of removing 'orphaned dll's and drivers', do it. Norton Systemworks can do this, but it's not really cheap.

So then you'd have some sort of fresh start I guess. No applications that can conflict and such.

Of course, there's no guarantee this will work, and it IS quite a bit of work.

Good Luck!

JOW,

Have you tried re-installing your audio/video drivers? (I guess I should first ask if audio play back is also effected.)

I really thought I had something more pertinent to say...um...out of curiousity, what video program caused this problem?
Edited by DeQuincey on 05/22/02 11:56.
