You need to login with an actual username. This is so windows will recognize that someone has logged on to the machine.

do a search for *.pwl files delete all of them.

go to start/run type in notepad c:\windows\system.ini

remove all the entries in the Password Lists section.

reboot

when the login screen appears type in a username with no password, click OK

And here's an article:

Thanks for the advice, unfortunatley the two greyed out boxes are still greyed out.
Incidentally, and i think this may be important, there was no logon box when i rebooted my pc. It went straight to my desktop.

Did you read the article they linked to above? It didn't ask you for your password because you created a 'null' password...Windows knows the correct password is nothing, so it doesn't even ask. That means you're logged in correctly now. As to why it's still greyed out, the article also mentioned you have to have the client for Microsoft Networks installed...I'm not sure if that was only for shared network resource passwords, but it's best to make sure in this case. Right-click on My Network Places on the desktop and click properties. On the configuration tab, there's a list of installed protocols, adapters and clients. Make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is installed. (should be near the top).

Also, if you're using user profiles, it doesn't allow you to save dial-up passwords if you created a null password for logon.

Check this stuff and write back :-)

Hi,
Unfortunatley the answer is yes, i did follow all of the above advice - in detail, nothing left out, and i still have no logon box for windows and greyed out boxes at dialup.

Followed your directions, but to no avail. When the computer reboots i get no logon box. When i look at the START just above shutdown it says LOG OFF... There is no name. When i log off i get a logon box with the option to put a name and password in. When i do this everything is OK. However, when i boot up again i am back at the desktop with the Start button showing LOG OFF... again and if i log off i get a logon box, this time with the details i filled in the last time round.
I hope this is not to confusing.
