I recently went into my registry and got rid of the logoff user that appeared in my windows98 start window,as I was really the only person using this computer I didn't need it,that worked fine, but now I notice that when you click on the start button,it doesn't say windows98 anymore there on the vertical blue bar on the left side of the start window. Can anybody explain why this might have happened? If I knew where to go in the registry I think possibly it could be fixed. Thanks for your help.

right click on the Task bar and select properties.

then uncheck the option "show small icons in start menu" click apply and then OK. you should be able to get the blue vertical bar again.

Try this. Use System File Checker to replace Explorer.exe in C:\windows. This is Windows Explorer and it contains the BMP in question.

Here's a link with instructions on how to use SFC.
It includes screen shots.

You will need your Install CD. If you do not have one and use a restore CD, the path to the cabs to use as the source of the file is used instead. That is usually

C:\windows\options\cabs

I do still have the install cd,I will sure try using the system file checker and extract the explorer.exe file,if that works,I won't have to go into the registry. Thanks so much for the help,I'll let you know if it works.

Well I have some bad news(at least for me it is) I tried this: Use System File Checker to replace Explorer.exe in C:\windows. This is Windows Explorer and it contains the BMP in question.
I got the notice that I extracted the file successfully,I re-booted my computer, everything was fine until I clicked on my start button and was hoping that I would see my missing Windows 98 that's missing in the blue vertical bar on the left hand side, well it's STILL missing. At least I'm still able to use my computer, does anyone else have any suggestions, maybe I don't need the logo there anyway,I know I'm using windows 98.Thanks for any help.

I appreciate getting help on this little problem( even though it REALLY wasn't a problem )just more of an annoyance.I have two computers, with the same operating system on both of them.As I said before,I went into the registry and removed the logoff user option on both computers. On one of them the windows98 logo remained in the blue vertical bar on the left side in the popup window of the start menu,on the other computer it didn't,that puzzled me.There are the same number of selections in both computer start menus, then this morning I tried something,on the one where the OS name was missing,I added one more program to increase the height of the menu box,and my windows98 logo reappeared right where it was supposed to be.Upon further review,I notice that the size of the start window on my other computer is larger( taller & wider )than my other one,and also when I click on the programs tab in my 'problem'computer the display of programs doesn't go straight across anymore it goes up.If I can figure out how to change the size of my start window and get my cascading windows to go straight across I'll be happy.
Thanks

I'd sure like to thank you for your response,I guess my brain was in one of those 'dull' moments that it couldn't tell me what to do to correct my problem.I went into properties\appearence\icons,there I changed the icon size, this automatically made the start window bigger,I was able to remove the additional line that I had added in there, now my windows98 showed up again( thank goodness ),and now my cascading effect seems to be working properly again also .Thanks for all of your help.Have a safe and enjoyable memorial day,we truly have a LOT to be thankful for.
