Normally it's a white background ('paper') you're typing on, in black. I use 'fullscreen' mode, it's less distracting. Under display properties>appearance, you can change the colors of nearly everything, including background colour. This can be done if you choose 'window' from dropdown box. Yes, this is all basic.

Is it possible to change colors ofr just one application? I would like, only in Word, to get the background black and typing in white; it's easier on the eyes.

Cheers

It would be easier to change the paper colour in word.
Click format>background>black then format>font and change to white, then press the default button.

But then there is always the choice of using WordPerfect's blue background.
