IE-6 has minimal control over Font Size. It defaults to "Medium" (what the heck defines Medium?) and I want to use "Smaller."

Can I specify the Font Size NUMERICALLY anywhere? Maybe somewhere in the Registry? If not, can I at least get the durn browser to use "Smaller" instead of "Medium" alla time?

HELP!

Try this:
Close Internet Explorer.

Now fire up Regedit, and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International\Scripts\3

Doubleclick the IeFontSize value in the right hand pane to bring up the Edit box, and change its value to
01 00 00 00

Open Internet Explorer, and see whether the change has been applied.

Good luck, Tony

toff,

Mines just slightly different than Tony's. I tested it, seems to work fine:

backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International\Scripts

Right-click on the Scripts key, choose new>DWORD value, name it Default_IEFontSize. Right-click on Default_IEFontSize and type in one of the following numbers:

1=smallest
2=smaller
3=medium
4=larger
5=largest

To lock IE font size so it can't be changed, backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft

Right-click on the Microsoft key, choose new>Key, name it Internet Explorer, right-click on the Internet Explorer key, choose new>Key, name it Restrictions. Then you'll need to right-click on the Restrictions key , choose new>DWORD value, name Fonts. Right-click on Fonts, choose modify and type in the number 1.

Reghakr,

I took that from my Registry (running IE 5.5 SP2) and the IeFontSize value was at that location.

Does that mean that in IE 6.0 it's at the key you specified?

Here's mine on WinXP Pro and IE6.0:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International\Scripts\3]
"IEPropFontName"="Times New Roman"
"IEFixedFontName"="Courier New"
"IEFontSize"=hex:02,00,00,00

Tony,

On my Windows 2000 machine with IE6, I have these entries:

"IEPropFontName"="Times New Roman"
"IEFixedFontName"="Courier New"

On my Win98 machine with IE6 I have the same.

My understanding is that the Default_IEFontSize has to be manually created.

Hmm.

I can only tell you I never created the entry myself, and, like on Bert's system, the value just appears to be there.

I just experimented with the font size [WinXP/IE6] and the registry open. The list of sizes runs 0 for smallest to 4 for largest and the number in this line changes: hex:02,00,00,00 . Changing in IE and refreshing the registry view shows the immediate change. And the change doesn't appear on all web pages, either. It had no effect on this WinGuides site where it did show change on others open at the same time. I'd assume the HTML coding of pages play a large part.

Bert & Tony.

The Default_IEFontSize was taken fom a Microsoft policy template. But I think you are correct with the values, they should be:
NAME !!Font4 VALUE NUMERIC 4
NAME !!Font3 VALUE NUMERIC 3
NAME !!Font2 VALUE NUMERIC 2 DEFAULT
NAME !!Font1 VALUE NUMERIC 1
NAME !!Font0 VALUE NUMERIC 0

0 being the smallest and 4 being the largest.

If you want to change the text size on pages which won't let you normally do so, go to Internet Options>General
Click the Accessibility Button near the bottom right.
This will bring up another page. On this page, select the box labeled
"Ignore font sizes specified on Web Pages"
