View Full Version : Missing folder tree view (W98)
When I open the windows explorer the left hand pane is just grey instead of the usual folder tree view. The right hand pane shows folders as usual. Does anyone know what has gone wrong or how to put it back. Is it a simple registry edit?

Try this; it ought to work:
Copy the bold to Notepad:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]
@="Explorer Band"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOCVW.DLL"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories\{00021493-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Save as Explorer.reg, doubleclick, and answer 'yes' to have it merged into your registry.
Reboot.
Good luck, Tony

Do not use that file if you are running IE5.5 any version. IE5.5 uses Browseui.dll as the InProc Server32 and that Registry file is incorrect.
For any other version of IE it is fine.

Thanks for that, Mo. I just pasted it from my files, and didn't check.
Here's mine (5.5 SP2)

Tony,
That doesn't fix it in IE 5.5 Any of the Bands using Browseui.dll as the InProcServer32 show a different behavior. I do not know how to fix this problem in IE5.5 other than to upgrade. Because all the other IE's use a different InProcessServer32
Try it yourself. Export that key and then delete it. You will still have the Folder Band available.
In an other IE if that were removed, there would be no Folder Pane. Instead there would be a dark gray where the Tree should be.
Thanks for the help. The problem that I have is with the normal "Windows Explorer" (C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE) not IE explorer. Does this still affect that? Is the fix still the same? Cheeers, Dave

We know it's about Windows Explorer.
Yet this is the fix, unless, as Mosaic1 pointed out, if your version of Internet Explorer is more recent than v. 5.01 SP2.
If you're running any version of IE lower than 5.5, it'll often work.
In that case, be sure to use the very first reg file I proposed.
What version of IE are you running exactly? Go to Internet Explorer > Help > Info, and tell us what it says there.

Tony,
This fix works for IE 6 as well.
dajc,
There was a rash of this at another Forum. I was able to duplicate the problem. I found that if the key which
Tony has copied and pasted were to be re-entered, the Folders Pane would be back. If it is damaged or something is missing, the Folders Pane is gone. Then along came someone with IE 5.5 and it didn't work. I reverted to IE5.5 and found that the Explorer Band there behaves in a different manner. No matter what I did I couldn't find the cure or duplicate the problem.
Now you know what Browser Integration is about. The line between Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer is blurred.
If you have IE 5.5, my best advice to repair this would to be either to downgrade or upgrade the browser.
If you have any other version, the first Registry File is the answer if in fact you have this problem. (The pane is there but it is dark gray matching the taskbar color. No Folders. )
Understand now. Hadn't realised they were that integrated. Thanks again.. to all
