I can not prevent Favorites folder from listing "favorites" in alphabetical order.
When I drag and place folders and shortcuts in the order I want, they revert back to alphabetical order if I close and reopen IE6.
I have tried the organize feature with no results.
The setting seems to be stuck on the default which places the shortcuts and folders in alphabetical order.
Could someone please help?
Thank you.

Actually, it is using ASCII order,
So if your folders/links start with numbers or characters like "~! .." , the ones that are listed before ABC on the ASCII chart, then these names will be listed before. On the other hand if you use graphical chars from the bottom of the ASCII list they will appear at the bottom.
So if you have an important folder or link you want to be always listed at the top just rename it from "something" to "~something" or "!something" etc..

That is how LOP.COM makes its gambling and other junk folders appear at the top... too bad for them it made their junk very easy to delete and get rid of.

I am not sure if windows will accept that if you do it manually though .. never tried it on favorites but in principle it ought to work.

Wow! After 2 days of trying to figure this out. Your suggestion works!
What I am wondering though is why did this happen all of a sudden? Two days ago I didn't need to execute this fix.
Is there a way of reverting back to the way it was?
I'm not very familiar with ASCII at all, this is all new to me!
Thank you!

There is a key word that goes in the registry I no longer know what it is cause I tweaked mine along time ago..

Is someone has not tweaked yet look in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites\

here is a microsoft article but it doesn't show what to use just where it is at..

Click here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q177482)

Coolsights2000, would it be too much to ask for you to check to see what the key word is in your registry and post it here?
I don't believe this is a common problem and I will take any information that can be provided.
If you could provide the info. it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I would not mind posting the key word .. I would be more than happy to post it but when I ran the script that was posted to sort the menu by spelling it delete the key word that was orignal there...

I know there was a word there cause I looked at what I would be deleting but I never recorded what is was... I guess I should have....

So if some one has not ran the script to sort the fav or start menu they should have the keyword spelling....

Come on someone ....

Thanks

try this,
using my computer /windows explorer go to C:\WINDOWS\Favorites
folder.
click to the VIEW menu >"Details" , (or click the VIEWS icon> and pick "Details" from the drop menu --same effect)

Now you should see multiple sorting columns, each with a corressponding button on top like this:
[Name][Size][Type][Modified][Last Visited][Last Modified],
When you click each of those buttons it will sort the files/folders/shortcuts according to that specific criteria. For example [Name] sorts by Name (ABC ..), [Type] sorts by file type like having folders together, links together, images together, etc..
[Modified] will sort according to the last added file; most recent, to the oldest. Or if you click any of these buttons a second time the sort will be in reverse, and so on.

Just decide which sorting method you want and ***select it*** before going to the next step.

Then while the Favorites folder is still open, go to the START menu (or press START "win logo" button on your keyboard),

Select Settings>Folder Options>VIEWS tap.
You should now see a list of options in the area under the "Advanced Settings:" header.

make sure the line "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked (has a check mark in the box to the left of it). If not check it.

then under that just highlight the Header called "Visual Settings", (I am not sure this is needed but this is how I did it)

Then click OK or Apply.

In case it does not work you can always go back to that dialog and select [Restore Defaults] or [Reset All Folders] depending on your situation & needs.

But if it works and you would like Windows to do the same for all other Folders, open the Folder you have customized, go to the Folders Options dialog, then choose [Like Current Folder] .

If you have problems , reboot in safe mode and try the same. On the next boot following that the safe mode changes should supercede or reset the previous windows folder settings.

If it still doesn't work make sure your windows has the latest products update and that there are no bad files being used by your windows explorer & internet explorer. Try the IE Repair tool as well.

These are the three items that I can only presume would be able to lead to an explanation to my current problem, however I do not have the knowledge to proceed any further.

Could someone help me in the right direction?
Thankyou.

. Apparently my favorites are not in alphabetical order but rather
ACSII order ( I don't really understand what that is). If I place a character such as "~" or "!" in front of
the favorite it will go to the top of the list.

2. There is a file called "Desktop.ini." in each floder that I have in
the favorites list. This wasn't the case before.

3. I checked the registry on a friend's computer and found this...
" Order 08 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 2c 06 00 00 01 00 00 00 16
00..." without the quotation marks.

I do not have this in my registry. It is located in WIN 98se
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Win
dows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favori
tes\

I may have deleted this order.......If so can I add it safely?? And will it make a difference? ie. solve the problem?
