If I have scan reg. checked in startup for a few starts while my system is operating properly and then turn it off to keep it clean from corruption. "just in case" how long will it stay in memory.. The reason I ask is because if you get the reg. corrupted and boot up with it turned on now the restore will be corrupted also. Won't it? Oh yea running win98.. I know someone knows the answer to this, and it may or may not help eliminate some reg. problems I have had in the past.. Thanks everyone.. jackha

You have to leave it your startup, or you won't have any backups to go to.

Running scanreg /restore will list the good backups with the word "Start" before the dates. It only goes back 5 days by default, unless you changed it to create more.

Well if I could find it and knew how to chang it I sure would. I have found the scan reg. but I can't find the place where you set the lingth of time it's in the memory.. It sure would be nice though if a guy could set the restore so it stayed in mem. till you replaced it with a new one, that way if you were gone on vacation for a cou;le of weeks and came back and found out that your reg. was corrupted from the last time you were on. you still had a uncorrupted one to replace it with..I don't suppose you would be interested in figuring that out would you.. jackha

It's been posted on this forum a few times lately. You need to create or download a Cabrest batch file. Check here for info. & instructions:

http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback3.html? (http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback1.html>http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback1.html</a>
)

This is on pg. 2. You change it in the scanreg.ini under MaxBackupCopies=5

This is how I do what you're trying to find out: I just copy the two files that make up the registry, and put them in a backup directory of mine.

In c:\windows look for system.dat en user.dat, select both, right-click and choose 'copy'; navigate to your backup directory (some dir that's not in the autoexec's 'path', meaning the system will only find it through navigating to your backup directory) and paste the copies.

I want a backup directory that's not in the 'path' so windows will not 'know' where' it is. Might be superstition, but I figured a virus or two might want to know where the registry is.

When I cleaned out the registry and everything is working fine, I make these copies, typically every two weeks or so.

However, I'd hate to give bad advice. I never reversed the process: meaning I never had to use these backups. It would be done by overwriting the two files with your backups in c:\windows and then rebooting. Can anyone tell me that this method will not get me in trouble?

Cheers

Thanks again Mosha and Pica. I need all the help I can get on this. What I have in mind is to copy the reg. to a floppy and get it completly out of the grasp of a virus. Then if for some reason I have to format and reinstall I will have a copy of the reg. without all of the crapp that packard b. adds to the windows program. " all of which is obsolete" and it took hours to get rid of, not to mention the times I had to start over because I deleted the wrong thing.. anyway now that I have it pretty well cleaned out I am trying to insure that I can keep it that way if I get a virus or loose a HD or whatever.. Anyway thanks for the help I printed it all out so I won't loose it .... jackha

The registry backups won't fit on a floppy, I'm afraid. Much too large!

Btw, you're welcome

I assume that you do know that the copy of the registry you're about to make will only work fine with your system (soft+hardware) as it looks now. Installing whatever program from now on, and then replacing the registry with your backed up registry will probably make the piece of software not work.

I'd say it's much more effective to back up the entire drive at a point you like your setup, using a program like Norton Ghost or something similar. But I never did so myself, so I can't give any advice about that..

To Mosha,, After reading those articles you told me about and finding where it is stored "right in front of me by the way" I chose the last one [rb004] and it had 134MBs put it on a floppy. Got do do somemore research to see for sure how to get it back into the system if I need it though. Thanks again for the help.......Pica..Yes I understand that if I install anything from here on out that it will not be on the floppy, but I already have a printer, scanner.installed a burner and a rom.and I think thats enough for an old fart like me.. Now like I said before now I need to learn how to get the reg. from the floppy back into the system incase I ever need it.. By the way I'm 67 yrs old and bought this computer "used" last Oct. Never played with one before and most of what I have learned about it is right here. and I sure do appreciate all the help that I get personally and also from reading answers that you folks have.. thanks again...jackha

To save more backups, open \WINDOWS\SCANREG.INI with Notepad and change the MaxBackupCopies= value from 5 to a higher number. You can set it as high as 99,but I would not reccomend it.I have mine set @ 10.

Thanks Pat, I set mine to 15 but I also have it on a floppy, and like I said in the previous post I am trying to find out now how to get it back into the proper file [windows\sysbckup] when or if I ever need it.. I'm still of the opinion that if a virus gets into the reg. that it also screws up the backup. because I haven't read where anyone who got one has been able to correct it by merely restoring the reg.from the backup, have you? thanks..jackha

Jackha,

I wouldn't think that if one were to get a virus that's causes that much damage, you'd restore the registry. You'd probably either reinstall or reformat and reinstall Windows. I don't really worry about it that much, I guess.

Mocha this is all true but it all started because I don't want to go through the regestry and delete all of the old Packard Bell crapp that they added to the MS OS. again if something happens, I have it pretty well the way I want it and everything seems to work fine and after having to run reg.restore and starting all over again because I screwed up and deleted the wrong thing a dozen or so times is very educational but enough is enough.. Anyway I figured out how to get it from the floppy to the sysbackup file, real simple after I tried a few things that didn't work I just tried drag and drop and it worked, was I ever suprised. Just bring A and esplorer up tile vertical and drag it into the backup.. Sounds real easy if you say it fast dosen't it. Now that I think about it it's easer that using the win.restore system and mine can't get screwed up lying on the shelf, I think everyone should have one.. [that's supposed to be funny]I want to thank all of you folks again because if I hadn't known that you were here to help I never would have tried to do this. and I want all to know that it [WORKS] jackha
