Hello,

I am trying to set-up a dual-boot system using Windows 98 and Window 2000.

I already have Win 98 SE (clean install) installed on my SCSI C drive (IBM Ultrastar 36LZX 18.3GB Ultra 160 SCSI hard drive). I would like to have Windows 2000 installed on its own drive (D) which is a IBM Deskstar 45GB 7200 RPM ATA-100 and is currently have this configured to the Promise 100 Ulta Controller. To date, I have not had any problems with this configuration and both drives are configured via FAT32.

When I get to the part in the Win 2000 installation process where you can choose a partition to install to, create a new partition out of free space or delete a partition drive C is the only drive that shows up. Drive D doesn't show up.

What am I doing wrong? I would perfer to have the two operating systems on seperate drives. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Step by step directions would be even better (lol).

Regards,

Pepperman

Can't help much but have seen it where it worked best with Win98 on the IDE drive [system drive/boot drive/C:] and other OS on the SCSI. Don't know the why's and wherefore's, just saw it work, haven't needed to try it myself.

If you have only one physical drive, you should be able to do that. If I were you, I would load a partition magic and boot loader. I made a mistake using win2k as bootloader, anyway, that's my preference. If you choose win2k to be your boot os, maybe you should manually fdisk or format the un-used partition first (maybe ntfs, it will be saver) Then reinstall it.

good luck

Hi,

I don't expect Windows to see your other partition on another hard drive. With the exception of "Utensils-Partition Magic, Fdisk etc.." to manipulate this. Its that when your having a dual boot operating system, its most likely to be on the SAME hard drive.

Unless, Im mistaken that you can have a dual-boot system on one OS [WIN98] on one drive and the other [2000] on another which I have never thought of or ever could be done!!!

You can have Win98 on C: and Win2000/XP on D: just fine for dual-booting. And D: can be either a partition or an additional drive. I'm doing Win98SE and Win2000 Pro on a notebook and Win98SE and WinXP Pro on another notebook, both with 20GB drives split 50|50. All the partitions are FAT32 so I can have access to all space.

More on dual-booting:

The problem hasn't got anything to do with partition problems. W2K doesn't come with drivers for the Promise ATA controller. You have to get the driver, copy them to a floppy, and when you start the installation of W2K, press F6 to add additional SCSI device controllers.:-)

i believe that what windows calls c drive may your be d drive . you need to load a driver for your scsi
