Hi All,
Could someone tell me how to get a complete listing of the "Mail To" sub key and all of its sub keys for a win98, ie60 and Outlook 97 email program. Clicking on an email link on a web page freezes up ie. The problem occured after installing, uninstalling Sun Star Office 5.2. The Mail To Protocol kept the star office file association which I deleted and reinstalled Office 97 and fixed iexplorer 6.0 which didn't fix the problem. Ah, if I just knew what should be in the sub keys. There is not a comparable system that I can easily get to.
Thanks for any help.

lchata,
Obviously you need to delete the registry entries pertaining to Star Office if it is no longer on your system.
To get Outlook Express as the default, try these steps:
Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail
When you click on the Mail key, you should see Outlook Express to the right of the (Default) entry. If not, make it the (Default) entry.
If you see anything pertaining to the Star Office program under this key, remove it.
Also try this:
Go to Start>Run, and type:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
And in Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Programs tab and verify that Outlook Express is set under the E-mail drop-down list box.
Then check here:
open Windows Explorer, go to View>FolderOptions, click the FileTypes tab, scroll to URL:MailTo protocol, click the Edit button, click the Edit button again and paste this line into the "Application used to perform action" box:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /mailurl:%1

Geru, thanks for your reply. I emaied my exported clients entries to you for review. Hope you don't mind. One question, I want Outlook 97 as my email client so, will following your suggestions make Outlook Express the default? The clients registry entry default is Outlook as I selected not Outlook Express. It was set up this way before I installed SO.
All Star office references have been removed from registry and file association table.
I suppose the /reg switch on the OE executable registers the program again and would also work for Outlook 97(I'm trying to learn here). Should I do this for Outlook 97 if I want it as default?
Outlook not Outlook Express is default action in all the reg and file association entries you mention. Couldn't Outlook be set up as default in all these cases or am I ignorant about something. It's likely that I am. I'll wait for your reply before I do anything. Please excuse all the questions, as I am learning and like to know more.
Thanks.

Sorry, I should have read the question closer.
No, do not registrer the Outlook97 program in that manner.
I only use Outlook Express, I don't use Outllok at all.
Does Outlook show up under Tools>Internet Options on the Programs tab in Internet explorer as an e-mail choice?

Hi again, the answer is yes. On the program tab I have three items: Outlook, Outlook Express and Hot Mail. I started off using OE when I first got the computer. Later I got Office 97 and started using Outlook 97. Didn't have any problems with it until I tried out Sun' Star Office. Didn't like it and the uninstall left SO file associations for the URL-MailTo Protocol and also the URL-News group Protocol. I haven't been able to discover the corroect settings even though I reinstalled Office 97 and fixed IE60. I may have to follow your guidlines for OE just to get my email and contact us links to work unless someone using Outlook 97 for their email handler will mail me the registry Key export and file associations settings.
The email I sent you with my registry export came back unknown addressee, I quess the address in your profile is no longer valid or I still have other email problems. Thanks for your efforts, I've read a lot of your messages and am impressed.
I just upgraded to win98SE which didn't change anything. I may try uninstalling Office 97 and reinstalling if I can't get a good working registry export. Boy, I hate uninstalling and reinstalling.
I'll keep trying and monitoring the forum in case someone comes up with the solution.

lchata,
Then try adding this to the file association table:
click the FileTypes tab, scroll to URL:MailTo protocol, click the Edit button, click the Edit button again and paste this line into the "Application used to perform action" box:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OUTLOOK.EXE" %1

From Dank in the Internet Explorer forum:
Go to Start>Run, and type outlook.exe /checkclient
You may need the full path, my original solution had the wrong path info.
The path would normally be:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\OUTLOOK.EXE" /checkclient

Hi Geru, Looks like its just you and me.
Ihave "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe"-cIPM.Note /m"%1" in my file association table. This was put in by Office 97 when I reinstalled. Don't know why the extra -cIPM.Note /m"%1" is included. I haven't changed it yet.

Re: checkclient, this failed when i tried it. Microsoft Outlook reports: "Unable to display the selected folder or item. Can't find this file. Make sure the path and filename are correct." I know the path and filename are correct even loked it up again. I tried the /checkclient switch with and without a space and using the short and long name formats in the run box with same error results. I also tried with and without Outlook and IE running with same results and with only windows running; same results.???? Restarted also, it just wont run. I get the Outlook startup screen when it's run and a lot of hard drive activity.
I have no problem accessing Outlook from desktop shortcut or from IE Mail dropdown.
Ihave made some improvemnt since updating to the Sr2b patch. A contact us or email web link brings up the email.dot which I can send and doesn't freeze up the computer. I may have had a corrupted file that reinstalling didn't fix but the patch did. I still get undelivered mail from one site I want to send email to; reported as recipient unknown. this may be a site problem but it is a viable business, "Zetor.com or amjawa.com".
