Okay, you need to be a bit more specific here;

1. What "regidit thingy"? Is it the registry? If so, 2. below makes no sense.
2. What is this "root .exe" file you erased?
3. Since you can't "open anything" in your computer, that must mean it still boots up... or does it? What (if any) kind of error messages do you get at bootup?

Regards...

Do not play in the registry unless it's a work computer :). Turn your computer on and hold down the control key right after the beep (POST). Choose command prompt only on the startup menu and hit enter. At the C prompt, type scanreg /restore. Choose the date one day before your screw up and hit enter. This will restore a good backup registry. Reboot and you'll be back in business.

What's your Operating System? win95/98 or NT?
If it's 98 then anonymous's tip should work.

Ok, I tried whatever that other person told me to do about that command prompt thing but I still don't get it, I don't even know what a command prompt is or where it is. and what is the beep after I turn on my comp? I'm so lost!

Ok, I will reprase my question.

I went in to the Registry and under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTS I erased .exe I can open some stuff on my comp but the important things such as word proccessor my outlook express won't open. Please help. My system is windows 95

Restoring the registry in Windows 95 is a lot more difficult then with Windows 98. If you had a hard time following my last message, I would suggest buying a Windows 95 book, which will give you the detailed commands in DOS to restore your registry. If that doesn't work then it's not looking good. By the way don't try installing Windows on top of itself, this will only cause more problems. If registry restore doesn't work then back up your data files and format & reinstall windows. You could try to deltree windows, but that doesn't always work either. Get the book, and it should make more sense.

I don't want to buy the book, that's gonna take me a really long time. Isn't there another way?
Plus, if I tell my dad to buy a Windows 95 book he will get suspicious and he will know I crapped up my own computer. I want something that u can just download and it fixes everything.

oh yah, when I try to open things, this box appears and it says "OPEN WITH" and u can click on different programs to open it with but nothing works. eeeeek!

There's no download that will fix your problem no more than there's a pill you can take to get insta-muscles. Spend $10 on a book, it'll come in handy down the line anyway. Dad's going to find out soon enough.... Better hurry!

Okay, you need to restore that *.exe back into your registry somehow. Here's how to do it:

IF you are reading this message on your messed up computer do the following steps below, except for step 4.
IF you're on another computer do ALL of the following steps below.

1. Highlight the following text between the two rows of "***", below and press Ctrl+C to copy to the clipboard. Then go to step 2
***
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"

***
2. Open Notepad and press Ctrl+V to paste the stuff you copied in 1 above into the file.
3. Save this file to your desktop. Call it "uhoh.reg". It's important that the extension is ".reg", NOT ".txt", or anything else... just .reg
4. Copy the uh-oh.reg file to a floppy disk, take it over to your messed up computer and copy it to the desktop of your messed up computer.
5. Right-click on the saved uhoh.reg file and select "Merge", then click OK on the Dialog box that comes up afterward.
6. Reboot.

Good luck, and be sure you stop by and let us know how (or if) it went!

If you call it the RegEdit Thingy, You shouldn't be messing with the reg at all.
read posts on this site, read links on this site, buy books, don't do anything unless you've backed up the registry

If u r using win95B, then u should have a file named system.da0 in the windows directory.. this file have hidden and attributed. All u do is just replace the system.da0 into system.dat.. system.da0 is the registry backup file which generated automatically by windows. Regard..

Great! It worked, eh? Now, just so you know (and this only works on Win95):

If you ever goof with the registry again you can fix it by IMMEDIATELY booting to DOS. You MUST do this before rebooting into Windows.

When you get to the DOS prompt, issue the following commands:

attrib -r-a-s-h c:\windows\system\user.dat
attrib -r-a-s-h c:\windows\system\system.dat
del c:\windows\system\user.dat
del c:\windows\system\system.dat
ren c:\windows\system\user.da0 user.dat
ren c:\windows\system\system.da0 system.dat

Now type "win".

Now, I can't help but say this (cause you're a kid and I'm a grown-up and so I get to):
If you MUST fiddle around with stuff like that--and hey, how else will you learn--MAKE A BACKUP of those darn files!

Since you're still young, it's no loss for you to spend few years in learning somethings crucial for you in your future.

Asking your dad to buy a book for you doesn't always mean you're 'repairing' somethings, rather you should say that you want to do things better through learning from the book instead of in the dark. Internet does have some places for you to learn Windows, just do a search.

'Open with' doesn't mean any program know how to handle every type of files. Some programs cease to load when they can't handle files you passed to them; some might crash your Windows. It's similar to you're telling a tailor to build a house for you...
