Greetings (again).

In building my image, I'm trying to remove, limit, or disable users from using Netscape Messenger in Netscape Communicator 4.7x. I want them to be able to use the Navigator and Composer sides of it, but I don't really want anybody sending or receiving mail on these machines, and it can pose a small security risk.

I'm looking at a way of using the Group Policy Editor to prevent people from using it, but I'm not hopeful. Anybody know a hack or tweak?

I've eliminated Netscape from all public machines.

I believe it can be accomplished only with 3rd party tools or Resource Hacker to grey-out the Messenger entries. Resource Hacker is available here:

It's the resdll.dll file you'll need to edit.

Another tool is Cooler by Fortres Grand Corp. Here's a link:

Thanks. Any idea which menu item to change? I'm guessing there's more than one. After looking at it, I'm thinking 1203 and 218.

Also, do you have a link to any information about hacking "resources"? I'd like to get more information and learn about how to actually go about hacking these resources.

Thanks for your help.

WildFire,

Sorry, I don't have a copy on my machine so I can't check. I do recall there was more than one and I could never find that damn AOL Messenger entry.

Look over Resource Hackers' help file, it's pretty detailed.
