well, i was COMPLETELY wrong. my bios is american megatrends and i found the definition for the 3 beeps thing and this is what it really says "base 64K memory failure." i have NO IDEA what that means either. it says also that this is a "fatal" error and i'm not sure if that means my computer is going to die within the next 24 hours or something. heh, it says, if you get these 3 beeps to do this..."reseat the memory and if this doesn't work, try getting new chips." i looked at the chip, and it's pretty firmly in the slot...it wasn't loose at all. do you think there are some hardware problems here or do you think that when i pushed it back into the cabinet i loosened the chip and caused it not to respond...thus, getting the 64K message? all help would be appreciated. thx

Take the memory module out, being sure to ground yourself by touching the case with the power off. Then push it back in firmly until the catches pop. Then turn the computer on.
Sometimes what looks firm isn't. And there could be microscopic corrosion on the contacts that removing and reseating cleans off.
One other thing to do is press firmly on the module that says AMI on it, it may have worked slightly loose. Don't take it out though, it's a lot harder to get back in. You will hear a little 'crackling' or popping as it seats.
As with all things electrical, connections have a way of loosening as they are heated and cooled, and computers don't show it as often or as plainly.
