I just purchased a Matrox 2500 video editing card. They suggest upgrading to Win2000pro. I now have win98. They say the card will run on win98SE. Can I upgrade to SE? It seems easier than uninstalling win98 and clean starting win2000pro. Any advice?

You can install Win2k without uninstalling win98

Yes, you can update from 98 to SE. Update disk from <a target="_blank" href=http://queen.pricewatch.com/search/searchcat.idq?ne=37620&l=37574&CiCodePage=Windows-1252&cr=98+upgrade&qc=%2298%22*+AND+%22UPG%22*+AND+@ctd+182&catd=182&ct=Software&cn=Software+-+Operating+Systems>Pricewatch: $16 + s&h</a>. You are correct in thinking an upgrade to 2K is best done as a clean install, since the os's are completely different in nature. But a 98 to SE update isn't as drastic a step and, from what I understand, should be relatively painless.

I have a Sony Video Camera and the manual states that Win98SE is required because Win98FE will not record the sound.

Do you know if your noted 'Update' will resolve this mysterious issue?

Don't get me to lying. I'd guess 'yes', but Windows isn't know for its reliablilty. I'd install the update, then go to MS and dowload Windows service packs, critical updates and anything else I could just to cover everything. If your only other option is a clean install I'd say it was worth a shot.

I already have everything except the 'SE update'.

Until I read the camera's manual I thought the only difference between first and second editions of Windows after adding all the service packs and updates was FE does not have ICS.

For $16+ I might give it a shot.
Go figure.

"Enhanced IEEE 1394 support gives support for more devices, such as digital camcorders. "

Perhaps this is the difference that the camera's manual is referring to.

Thanks.

I am also glad that LarryG got what he needed from this post too.
Larry, thanks for letting me share your post.
