frequently, when efforts to speed up web page downloads have been unsuccessful, i'll "run" WINIPCFG,release and renew my ip address and the situation improves considerably. this is fine ..however,i wonder why i have to resort to this step often and if it signals a problem.

What type of internet connection do you have? Boradband or Dialup? What you might try to do is uninstall/reinstall tcp\ip out of your network section.

Check your Network Card properties. If you have a Power Management tab there uncheck " Allow Computer to turn off this device to save power."

If you have cable modem service and a network card, do the following:

Completely shut down your computer.

Pull the plug to the cable modem.

Wait 5 - 10 minutes, then plug the cable modem back in.

Wait 2 - 3 minutes to allow the lights to settle down and for the cable modem to reset.

Power up your computer, then go on-line and see if browsing speed has returned to normal.

Sorry about the delay Clif. What I would do is going into your Control Panel and Network section. Remove all instances of TCP\IP (you may want to jot down notes/settings/properties of what you have, so you can set it up that way again). Choose okay and restart the computer. After the restart, go back into Control Panel and Network. Click onto Add, choose protocol, and add again. On the left, highligh Microsoft and on the right, highlight TCP\IP. Choose okay and you will get all TCP\IP added back. Choose okay and restart once more. Test things out and see how it treats you.
