View Full Version : Startup (W98)
I am computer illiterate so please bear with me. I desperately need help! When I start my computer it goes to the background page then for a moment there is a flicker of the taskbar which disappears. Then nothing. No program icons. I rightclick on the background...nothing. I try control alt delete and the only thing showing is hidserv. Where is everything? I know there are ways through dos to go to my backup files and reinstall them somehow. but I don't know how. Also when the computer starts it says rem-by Windows98 Network - c:\windows\net start Any suggestions, please. Thank you, Heather

What version of Windows are you using? Are you able to click
start? If yes
go to start and then run then type msconfig then OK
Click Startup button if you see hidserv selected unselect
then click Autoexec.bat you will see something like
rem Windows98 Network - c:\windows\net
unselect also then click ok then restart computer
if not you can use ms dos mode

Heather,
If this happened less than 5 days ago:
One of the best things about 98, is that it keeps a backup of the registry for the past 5 days.
Try hitting F8 on startup, choose command prompt only. At the c: prompt, type:
cd\windows\command
then type:
scanreg /restore
and choose a date prior to the problem.
I would also rename autoexec.bat to autoexec.old
At the command prompt, type:
ren c:\autoexec.bat autoexec.old
Then tap the Alt_Ctl_Del keys to restart.
