need major help fast (W98)

when i turn on computer it starts loading and when the windows logon box should pop up it just stops.........using cable internet.....running windows 98SE....try to start in safemode so i can troulbeshoot and i get this box.....
Mprexe--performed illegal operation. i cannot find my rescue/recovery disk for my gateway/astro computer...and i did have a startup disk i made...but when i try to restore a different registry day that was okay........it still will not start my computer. i rented one for a week and no- one seems to be able to help me and my free rental week expires today....i am at a loss and very upset as this is my only means of communication with my family out of state.....please help if you can.......have no money to have a repairman come and attempt to fix.";

If it is not password related then you should probably remove your network card to see if the problem is related to the NIC setup.

Gateway Astro computer (all-in-one type)
this is what i have already done--Try hitting F8 on startup, choose command prompt only. At the c: prompt, type:
cd\windows\command
then type:
scanreg /restore
and choose a date prior to the problem. to NO avail.........the last one that should be good is not the one i need i need to go further back and can't ........now i found this other POSSIBLE fix but am unsure if i should attempt it incase i make the problem worse........can you read this below and let me know what you think.........this other puter has to go back in the morning to the rental center so i only have today to get this going..........PLEASE HELP IF YOU ME CAN.....(i haven't tried for a couple of days so i would be more up to coping with this darn problem....or make it worse
Is the registry damaged?
To determine whether the registry is damaged

Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode.

At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER to remove the file attributes from the registry backup:
c:\windows\command\attrib -h -s -r c:\system.1st
Type the following line, and then press ENTER to remove the file attributes from the current registry:
c:\windows\command\attrib -h -s -r c:\windows\system.dat
Type the following line, and then press ENTER to rename the current registry:
ren c:\windows\system.dat *.dax
Type the following line, and then press ENTER to copy the backup file to the current registry:
copy c:\system.1st c:\windows\system.dat
Restart your computer.
Note
The System.1st file is a backup of the registry created during the initial installation of Windows 98. Therefore, the Running Windows 98 for the first time banner appears and Windows 98 appears to be finalizing its settings.
If replacing the System.dat file with the System.1st file solves the problem, the problem may have been related to registry damage. To update the new registry, reinstall the programs and device drivers that you added after you first installed Windows 98.

If replacing the System.dat file with the System.1st file did not solve the problem, restore the original registry.

To restore the original registry

Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.
Type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each line:
c:\windows\command\attrib -s -h -r c:\windows\system.dat
copy c:\windows\system.dax c:\windows\system.dat
Restart the computer.

I don't think it is a registry problem. Follow the details in the first QArticle regarding your password files and see if this resolves the problem.

i cannot get into safemode to make any of the changes those articles said to do.......can't get to the start menu since windows won't load....i can only start like i am going into safe mode using f-8 but then have to use commands to do anything else. any other suggestions........that was why i thought that maybe i could change to old registry since that did work before one time........but just need to go back further than the 5 days.....help???i have been working on this for over a week....minus coulple days for a break before i took a hammer to the computer..........but went thru every single page......(all 126 of them) in this section.........i am lost now..........
