I recently uninstalled Office 2000, after having some problems. I re-installed Office 97. Now when I double click on an Office document the Office 2000 installer starts. I used Eraser 2000 to clean off all remnants of Office 2000 prior to the Office 97 install. I have gone through my file associations to make sure Office files are associated with the correct application. There appears to be no problem there. I have tried running TweakUI to repair associations to no avail. Any advice would be appreciated

I'm not sure what Eraser2000 is, but Microslop has an MS Installer clean-up tool just for Office2000 (Q238413). It fixed my Installer problems when a Office reinstall wouldn't fix it. It was simple to use and seemed to delete everything in the registry having anything to do with the applications I tried to uninstall. I then deleted the files from the drive and reinstalled Office. Seemed to have worked, but it's only been a couple of days and the users really haven't stressed tested the install good yet.

I got the impression that if you have uninstalled an app that the cleaner program won't find it and therefore can't clean up after it. Eraser may have cleaned off just enough that the MS app can't find the registry entries, and so Office2000 won't be on the list of installed apps to remove. You might try to reinstall Office2000, then run the MS clean-up tool to scrub the registry, delete the files from the drive manually, and reinstall.

Thanks for your reply. I tried your suggestion and installed the Installer Cleanup utility. However when I ran it there was no reference to Office 2000 installer. Other programs were listed in the dialogue box but not Office. Any ideas as to where to go from here?

That is what I thought might happen since you already tried to uninstall.

Re-install Office2000. I know it won't work, but this will give the Installer cleanup tool something to work with. Then it can detect Office and delete all the registry entries, including any that are corrupt or incorrect. After it does it's thing, manually delete the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office from Windows Explorer.

Then restart the computer and re-install Office on a clean slate.

I seem to be in a Catch 22 situation. I cannot reinstall since the installer asks for an SR-1 installation disk. I do not have this disk, since I downloaded SR-1 from the Microsoft Office site. Where does one go from here?

Please list the programs relating to Office shown in the Add/Remove Programs control panel and in the window of the Microsoft Installer Cleanup tool.

What you will need: (1) an original Office 2000 install disk and (2) the SR-1 update package stored locally. If I remember correctly the update site offered two options: (1)download a setup app that ran and downloaded the needed files, and (2) a complete SR-1 package available for download. Just to keep things simple you need the complete package. Here is the link if you don't have it.
