View Full Version : Win Desktop Update & Quick launch (W95)
Mocha

I've been trying to find a way to get the Quick launch bar, that some of us 95ers have been deprived of. I did a search and came up with various instructions on how to go about it. There are a number of different ways, but I get nowhere. (which is nothing new for me)
One is to uninstall I.E. 5, go back to ver.4 and choose the Windows Desktop Update. That didn't work out, even though the option came up (which was s'posed to be a good sign).....said no dl sites? I have I.E. 4 setup files on my hard drive.
A couple sites gave instr. on going to the command prompt and typing: IE5Setup.exe /C:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_WIN /I:y"
Plus, Quote: Note that some sources on the Internet indicate that under Windows 95, the switch IE4Shell_95x86 should be used, rather than IE4Shell_WIN.
Neither works, but then I only know a few basics about DOS. Why when the DOS window opens, does it show the path C:\Windows\Desktop? How do I point to the location of the files? That folder is just under "C".
Plus, there's another way suggested. Instr. say whichever option you try, to first to open iesetup.ini and chg. the Shell_Integration=1 (it's zero by default). Also, open the iesetup.cif and locate IE4Shell_Win > "DisplayName=%MSIE4Shell%" Chg. Uivisible=0 to =1 and save. ;P
Another way.....am I boring you yet?? LOL Is to go to Add/Remove choose custom and the Option should show, but it doesn't and a message comes up, "Windows cannot find Window Update Setup Files on this comp". They are there for cryin' out loud!! There's gotta be a way. I came across a few other ppl. that have been trying to find a way, then determination got a hold of me, but......it's rapidly dying out. =(
If anyone has gotten this to work or has a clue, I'd appreciate the input. If not, oh well...no biggie! /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

Hi Bert,
Strange, but the link in the email didn't work...I don't see your post?
I have I.E. 5.5, and I have 95b OEM, so I'm not at all sure that ver.4 was ever on this comp., or didn't 4 come with Win95? I got my PC used. I have Plus! on here, too.
Thanks

There was an error in my post but I couldn't get it back soon enough and it apparently deleted at the same time as your post.
Try the article at the link I just posted.
What is the file date/s on the IE4 setup you have you have?
Mocha
04-07-2002, 05:05 AM
July 24, 2000. Actually, I haven't had it that long. I download it several months ago, when I wanted to go back to 4. Too new maybe??
BertImmenschuh
04-07-2002, 05:05 AM
I just looked at the Win95B CD and IE3 is on it, file date 8-24-96.
Mocha
04-07-2002, 05:10 AM
I have I.E. 3 setup too in my Win Update Setup files. The only thing I have to go by is the Time Stamp. I downloaded in Nov., so that's the only date otherwise. 1.38 mb each...3 and 4.
BertImmenschuh

Shouldn't be too new. Needs to be 4.01 and possibly SP2. But I remember 4.01 had the big changes.

I'll do some more searching. What gets me is that I know there's a place to download the Win Desktop Update, because I had done it awhile back, but decided to chuck it!! Don't ask me why. ;p

Mocha, here is the PC Magazine article you probably read:
June 26, 2001
Add the Windows Desktop Update
By Neil J. Rubenking
Internet Explorer 5 does not include the Microsoft Windows Desktop Update. I found a solution to add it to Windows NT 4.0 with IE 5. I executed the following command from the folder that contains IE5Setup.exe:
IE5Setup.exe /C:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y"
This command downloaded and installed the necessary files. I then rebooted and had the Windows Desktop Update. For a Windows 95 machine, the command would be
IE5Setup.exe /C:"ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_WIN /I:Y"
Eric A. Holt
If you install IE 5 on a Windows 95 or NT 4.0 system that never had IE 4, you don't get the Windows Desktop Update (WDU). In the past, we've offered several unpalatable choices for obtaining it. You could uninstall IE 5, install IE 4 with the WDU, and then reinstall IE 5. You could download and install the Internet Explorer Administration Kit. Or you could upgrade to a newer operating system. The automated command shown here is an excellent alternative.
Note that some sources on the Internet indicate that under Windows 95, the switch IE4Shell_95x86 should be used, rather than IE4Shell_WIN.

Glad to help, it was no big trouble, I was copying CDs for a client on my other machine while browsing.
Actually, there is just a tad of self-interest involved. As I go to bed, I have started the download myself, so I can add it to my 'toolbox' of software.
Did you notice that site belongs to William and Mary College?
Mocha
04-07-2002, 08:07 AM
Who are William and Mary College? I don't know, but that's 78mb... I'm on a slow 33k dial-up....7hrs!
I did a real stupid thing, and I should know better. ;p I chose that 'customize the version you have now'. (just cause I didn't want to start a large dl at the moment)
They branded my browser, changed all my connection settings, made their site my homepage, and worse yet removed all the sites in my Restricted zone!
I have a problem here......I had I.E. SPYAD installed. I try to re-merge that into my registry, and I get a message saying it was successfully merged, but I have not got one site in my restricted list now.
I've tried repairing I.E., removed the branding, ran Regcleaner, etc. I don't know what I'm gonna do to get that list back there. It doesn't make any sense. I thought I oughta tell you about it.

College of William and Mary was founded in 1693 and is located 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., in Williamsburg, Virginia. It's the 2nd oldest college in America.
My download ran all night but I was sleeping. I'll be installing it later today.

Well, to say I am disappointed in the IE5 from W & M would be an understatement. It seems they have made considerable changes in the branding .cab file and some things won't work. A little more exploration on their site indicates the software they have for downloading has features disabled based on the students use or to prevent some uses.

Found another article:
"Q. How do I install the Windows Desktop Update component directly from the Internet Explorer 5.0 setup process?
A. Usually, you must first install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (IE 4.0) with the Windows Desktop Update component, then upgrade to IE 5.0 or higher. However, you can perform the following steps to directly install the component from the IE 5.0 setup process:
Run IE 5.0's setup file (ie5setup.exe).
When IE 5.0's license dialog box appears, find iesetup.cif in one of the subdirectories of the Windows Temp directory.
Open iesetup.cif with Notepad and locate in [IE4Shell_Win] (for Windows 98/95) or [IE4Shell_NTx86] (for Windows NT) "DisplayName=%MSIE4Shell%." Change UIVISIBLE=0 to UIVISIBLE=1, and save the file.
Accept the license, then click CustomInstall.
You can see the "Windows Desktop Update" component in the components list. Select it and any other components you need. Then click Continue."

Hi Bert,
That site absolutely hijacked my browser! I don't know what else to call it. It changed my security settings and a multiple of other settings in my Internet Options. My restricted sites actually had enable Active X controls among other settings changed.
I'm unable to get a list to show up in the Zone! It says 'no sites listed' and yet I've got IESpyad installed. There were many changes in the registry. I spent all last eve. trying to straighten this mess out. I removed the Custom folder, edited whatever I could in the registry, went back to the previous version and reinstalled I.E., repaired it....on and on. Things are still not straightened out.
It showed several redirect url's in the registry. Plus, even though I've supposedly removed the branding and changed the Window title in I.E. again with my name on it, it still shows the branding! OE was branded as well.
I looked in Objects and there was an Active X shockwave component installed, dated the 7th, which tells me a lot, too.
I don't know how to get rid of all the junk! I'm unsure about a few things, such as there were many redirect URL's under.....one under windows update with their address!
www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&....
plus search, mail, etc., etc. many that are directed to their site. I do need to know whether that isapi part belongs? I removed everything after that.
I figured I didn't get back to you in time last night...

Thanks Reghakr,
I'll check that out....but I seem to have a big problem now, as a result of downloading from that site. There have been many changes made in my settings and registry. It's like I've lost control of my Internet settings...I gave Bert some details on what all.
Plus, I just found out I can't send mail in OE, on top of everything else. I get a message that I have no account created! Things are a mess. /images/forums/icons/mad.gif

Bert,
You don't have to apologize! How would you know. Yeah, like the saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".
I can't believe how much of a mess this is. I'm pretty familiar with my Internet settings, etc. how they should be and all that. I'm unable to change a lot of things back to the way they were.
I need to find out more what to look for in the registry, etc. It's unbelievable. I have no idea how to get back control over OE either.
Btw, I didn't want the Quick Launch bar that bad. /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif I guess that site belongs in the restricted list! That's what really got me, is the changes it made in the Restricted Zone.
We'll call it a learning experience. /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

I know you have Win95. I seem ot remember you say8ing a while back that you had installed scanreg. Did you? If so, restore a previous registry.
If not, here's a page to have a look at:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/hijacked.html
Also, download Startup Log and run it to see what is starting in the event you have someting changing things back after you fix them.

Mosaic,
Yes, I have scanreg installed, BUT when I was searching and deleting references to that site, that was no longer in the run command. I re-merged it.
I found out the scanreg /restore feature doesn't work. I decided to find out one day, in case I'd need it sometime. The other feature function. Do I need to register a .dll or something?
I've been to that link you mentioned. I have Ad-Aware installed and IESPYAd, but since this happened, it shows I have no sites in the Restricted Zone! I can see the long list in the registry, but it has no effect. I just finished removing a lot more junk under HKCU, HKLM, and HKU.
I'll download that Startup Log, but I didn't think about looking in Sys.ini.
I thought my best bet would be to restore, but do you have a clue why it wouldn't work?
Thanks a lot,
Carol

You should have a good look around the registry for possible restrictions too. It may be that you cannot add entries to the security Zones because of a restriction.

Have a look in Windows\sysbckup for any rbxxxcabs. If you don't have them there's no use in worrying about a registry restore now.
That can be a seperate post. You do know that a scanreg /restore must be performed fom the pure command prompt?
REstart the computer and tap F8 to bring up the boot menu. Choose Command prompt only and at the C:\> type scanreg /restore and press enter?
At any rate, here's IEradicate's address.

I do have rb000, etc. cabs.....5 files. Yes, I know the restore needs to be done in pure DOS.
I have I.E. and I.E. cab files. There originally were no cabs; I got those several months ago. I have no install CD, but I do have cab files on my hard drive. This is an OEM version 95b. I had restored to previous version awhile back.

I don;t know what to tell you to do at this point. I would have to be there to know what and where to look. This is one of those things which is difficult to see hands off.
What exactly happened when you tried a scanreg /restore the last time? ALos, have to restarted your computer since you did the IE4 install? If you haven't dont! You can restore the REgistry fomr your last successful start. If that registry is clean of all this, you may be able to use it. The problem is going to be the files you have installed for IE 4. But as I said, I think there is a manual uninstall.
Post back. I have to look for ths instructions to restore the registry. Don't reboot. unless you already have.
All I can tell you is if you IERadicate, you are going to need to install IE again.

There was so much junk in the registry. Besides mail settings, there were lines under News server with this address: "newscampusnet.org". There are several places with a value NNTP use Sicily. What is that referring to?
That's the problem, there are so many things I don't know what all I need to get rid of, other than the obvious.
Thanks, I'm sorry for Bert, cause he was just trying to help. To be honest with you, I'd rather uninstall McAfee again! LOL

i was talking about the backup Windowsmakes after each successful start. But if you have started several times it's too late for that.
I think you should get on the internet and download a copy of IE5.A version higher than what you have. Here's how to download the entire package to disk for install later.
-------------------------------------------------------
Download Setup. Click on Setup
Choose install Minimal or customize your Browser click next. Choose the components you want to install.
Hit the Advanced Button Check the Download only box. Press OK Click next
There is another box here too. Associate file types. Check that if you want IE to be associated with its usual file types.
------------------------------------
then get IEradicate and do it.
Install IE from the download you performed and see how that goes.
What do you think? It's your choice.

Mosaic,
I haven't really installed I.E.4. The version I have currently is 5.5 SP2. I tried to run 4 to get that Windows Desktop Update. It didn't look like I went back to 4, perhaps 5.0.
I never thought about the registry backups, but I worked on this quite a bit last night, so I rebooted more than I normally would have.
It's been awhile since I attempted that Restore, so I don't recall.....but I think it was a message saying it couldn't be restored or whatever. I could try it again and see what shows up, but....;p I almost fear to attempt it any other way, to be honest with you.
I checked under those keys you posted. There are restrictions under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Restrictions
Plus here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
??Active Desktop: No deleting, no editing, etc.
Can I delete both of those?
I do think I got most of the other things, and did get the branding, etc. removed...but who knows. If I can't control my restricted sites. Plus, with Internet sites at default level, no cookies! I've always had it at default. Just thought I'd tell you or whoever else may be interested.
That Irradicator completely removes the works, right, and I'd have to set everything up again, right?
Thanks,
Carol

Carol,
If you tried to restore the registry before and got a message that it failed there could be a very simple reason. If you tried to restore the oldest registry, it could easily fail. Go ahead and try it again. Then I would say you are going to have to see how your computer acts. I don;t know what files etc you have. Possibly you might go back to the link Reghakr provided and install the Desktop update. Like I said, I don't know what they did to your registry.
If that is not a go. Then try the Ieradicator. But it is all up to you.
If worse comes to worse and you have no IE you can browse an AOL CD and install a copy of their modified Browser. Not the AOL software, just the browser if you are up against a wall and nothing else works.
Because after an Ieradicate on Windows 95 you are going to need to reinstall IE.

Those are the stub paths. They won't help us out.
Just back up anything you delete from the registry before you delete it. If you are talking about active desktop restrictions, delete them.
Mocha

Mosaic,
I should have posted this differently. The Active Desktop is a subfolder under Policies-Explorer. To right it has a list of No's. The same under the other key with the Restrictions under I.E. A long list of No's in the right pane. (as in yes or no)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Restrictions
Plus here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
I think you may misunderstand something. I didn't download I.E. from that site. I only downloaded "Customize the version you have", which was a small download. That's all...
There is no I.E. on the AOL CD. They prob. just have a customize file add-on also. Branding I assume.

I understood it to mean it was a list of restrictions. And I recommended you remove it but to be safe I always tell people to back up. You use Win95 and That is a case of double backup in my book.
I thought you had added the active desktop. But no? Just a lot of problems. Maybe I'll have a look at this download. Not run it, see if I can read it. I wonder.
Mosaic1

Herte's the good news. If you only downloaded the Customizer, go back and download it again. This time save it to the desktop. If you have Winzip, roght click on the file named
ie5cust.exe and choose Extract to Folder Windows\desktop etc. Then extract all the files in there to that same folder. They are inf files . Open them in Notepad. All the policies and registry changes will be listed inm these inf files. It may be tedious, but you will be able to undo it all.
Why did you not download and install the IE5.5 with Windows Desktop? Maybe it's good you didn't. You did Download a file which was clearly marked as a cutomize for William and Mary. And therefore you have no complaint against the College. Sorry.

One quick addition before I call it a night. Did you run the clear customization command? If not copy and paste this into Start>run and then press enter

Between this and the inf files, I think you'll be OK.
I'll be around tomorrow and I know Reghakr and the others will help you out too. This place is great that way. Good luck. I think it's going to be fine.

I hate these long Threads. They always get too confused. Did you open the archive and extract all the infs? These are going to tell you exactly what you need to know. And ifyou execute the command I gave you, the appearance of your Browser will revert too. I don't know whether or not the clear command will remove all the registry changes. But the infs will tell you what and where.
Bert will be able to go back too. If he undoes the branding and opens the cab with the infs. It will be tedious, but he'll get there if his is in the same shape as yours is.
The Branding cab is where the infs are located. And nothing short of a registry restore would have helped. IEradicate probably would not have touched a lot of these.

I am on Eastern Time and it's the middle of the night here. I need to sign off.
Now that you have the directions, you will be able to do this. Let it go until tomorrow. Others will be able to download and open the archive the same as I did. They will read the infs and help you remove the restrictions.
Before you remove anything. BACK UP.
It looks worse than it is. Get some rest.
EDIT: I see you posted. Yes, Run that command first. It will at least get you your familiar IE look back.

Did you go to the site Reghakr pointed to for PLansdowne's file to install Active Desktop?

All I did was read the infs and give instructions on removing all those Restrictions in the registry. Nothing about the Active Desktop.
IE came packaged on software too. Is it possible you have a copy somewhere in your collection of Software Install Cd's?

Two posts in one here...I've been wondering how it's goin' with you, Bert. This is one time, I'm glad I have a slow connection. /images/forums/icons/tongue.gif
To whomever:
I'm unsure where I can delete the whole value in some of these lists. Can I delete the entire line of each listing in this .inf file?
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Int ernet settings....
Can I delete all the values here, so that to the right under Ctrl. Panel, it only shows default 'no value' set? These are all showing 0 already rather than 1 as shown in the .inf file.
HKCU,"Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel","GeneralTab",0x10001,0,0,0,0
I've left some of things simply because, this throws me off. Although, I've got it taken care of otherwise. It was sure nice to have that list back in my Restricted Zone!
Btw, I don't see how people could possibly know, what all they're getting themselves into by going to download that I.E. and Desktop Update.
That's not right the way they have that. Plus, when a small file can totally change your security settings, so that you have NO security settings! Like I said, I checked in my Restricted Sites, and there were things enabled! Download ActiveX controls was set to enable, and this installed an ActiveX control on my PC. This is what Restrictions are s'posed to be like???!!!
Thanks,
Carol
I forgot to ask about those redir.dll addresses. I had deleted everything to the right of isapi/. In most of those cases, that's after MS address. What is isapi? Can I remove that too? It's after ms.com/isapi.

Carol,
Yes. I thought it would be easier to remove the Control Panel Subkey altogether. But sure. You can leave the entries if they are set to 0. I prefer to remove and inactive restricitions. I never leave an entry set to0. That's my own preference. Or Leave the Control Panel Subkey alone and have nothing but the default to the right. They sure loaded that key with restrictions. Do it the way you like.
I think they went too far. I agree 100% that Downloading IE5x with the Active Desktop update should not have done that. They should have had a warning. And even a Customization should not have gone that far. When I opened those inf files and saw what they had done, I honestly could not believe it. I think they went way beyond the reasonable.
So are you all set now? Did you go and Download from the site Reghakr recommended. PLandsdowne is excellent. And if Reghakr recommends it, you can feel comfortable using it. Read the directions. After all this, you should at least get your Active Desktop.
Mo
After you have finished in the Registry, go back to my directions and anything you do not understand, copy so I can go over it with you again. Please, copy exactly. This is confusing otherwise. I want to be sure we are talking about the same things. No cooked registries. Please! Oh NO.
EDIT: You asked if you could delete an entire line in an inf file? Did you mean the registry? those inf files are not going to do anything to remove these restrictions. They are a map to tell us what change were made in your Registry.

Mosaic,
It's just that I'm not familiar enough with the registry to know what should be left and what string belongs there in the first place...Or whether the values were just changed in some cases or what. So, anything with a value of 0 can be safely deleted?
I just left a few things I was unsure of, but otherwise I'm all set and things are back to normal. What's left, which is very little, isn't having any kind of effect one way or the other. I'd just as soon get rid of whatever I can safely get rid of.
Yes, I had downloaded that Active Desktop last night. I haven't got around to installing it. I wanted this all taken care of first.....haven't been on my PC much today. No cooked registries is right. LOL
Yes, I meant an entire line in the registry that is listed in the .inf file. In other words, if it's something showing in the .inf file......delete in reg.
Btw, if Reghakr had only come along a tad bit sooner. I do appreciate him sharing that with us. I'm looking forward to this....we gotta have it now!
Thanks tons for all your help!

I need the exact key as written. Then I can tell you where to remove what. If you post the entire key, possibly export it from the registry, I'll let you know. I want to be very careful not to do any more harm.
Go back to my instructions and read them again. If you are still confused do the above.

I'm sure it must have been a real chore for you. I don't doubt that a virus would probably be easier to get rid. I can't imagine what all you had to deal with.

Mocha,
Yes. that is the key which reflects the changes you make yourself. Rather than doing it in the registry, you make those changes using Internet Options.
Cache_Update_frequency Internet Options>settings>"check for newer version of page" Make you choice.
Start Page........... that's the Home Page. Set that to what you like. they have it set to blank.
Most of these look OK They are personal choices. GO to Internet Options and make your choices.
You snould leave the address alone.
"First Home Page"="http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}&ar=runonce&pver={SUB_PVER}&plcid={SUB_CLSID}"
This is the page which appears after you first install or repair IE.
-----------------------------
Search Page"="http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch"
This is the search address. Leave it in place too.
-----------------------------
ProxyOverride"="<local>"
I would remove Local
Go to your IE and choose the settings you want to use for Advanced, Histroy. Temp Int and then go to Cookies and set your choice there. They have you accepting them.
Go to Security> Internet and click on the "Custon Button" and scroll the list and make you choices there. These are personal choices. Set this level to protect yourself. Be cautious.
-------------------------------------------------
If not sure, start another thread for advice on these.

Mosaic,
I can tell those are my personal choices by looking at them. I'll have to go over them again. I usually have my settings to accept cookies in the Internet Zone. I've always set everything but restricted to default.
I think I removed some addresses (the redirect part only) in the registry elsewhere, that I shouldn't have, but so many were directed to W&M. I'm not careful enough; I need to have more respect for the registry. ;p
I wish I'd have waited for some direction on this in the beginning. I'd already taken care of most of it, by yesterday.
Thanks,
Carol

After I got my computer cleaned up from the W & M/IE5.5 fiasco, turned out instead of having a boot sector virus screwing up Win95, I had to download and flash the BIOS to an earlier version to turn off the built-in virus check. It worked fine on Win98 but wouldn't let Win95 install correctly, which in turn screwed up IE5.5, even when disabled in the the BIOS. I guess it is a somewhat-obscure problem. Now have a completely clean drive [low-level formatted] and ready to start again.
Mocha

A boot sector virus? I didn't know anything about that. Plus, do you mean installing that I.E. caused that many problems to where you had to reformat? I wouldn't doubt it.
I just installed the Desktop Update and hadn't seen the ReadMe file....usually use those before asking. I think my eyes were beginning to cross. LOL
I don't think I could have survived, if I'd have download that I.E. I use MSN Explorer as my browser, so I hadn't seen the links. Well, after I installed the desktop, lo and behold there were L&M links, etc on my desktop.
I had just gotten my PC tweaked just right and running good; it doesn't sound happy....but I think things are alright. I haven't had much of a chance to be on it.
I don't know, but I'm going to try find a way to report that site. Although, I really don't know how to go about it or exactly what to do. People need to be warned! I wonder how many ppl. have been tricked into that.
I'm glad you got it taken care of. It's partly my fault for posting on the subject. /images/forums/icons/tongue.gif
