Cannot highlight in Word XP (W98)

Here at work we have a computer that is running Office XP standard with Windows 98.

The problem we're having is that we can't highlight any text with the mouse, there is also no left click functionality either. The mouse will move the cursor around on the page, there just doesn't seem to be the ability to highlight. The highlight feature works in wordpad and notepad, and the mouse's other functionality in windows works perfectly.

Any ideas on why I can highlight in Word XP?

See if you can highlight this way: get the cursor on the page anywhere, hold down the shift key, and press the right or left arrow. The line should begin highlighting the further you press the arrow key. If it works, you have confirmed the problem is with the mouse or its software while running in Word. And if the line doesn't highlight using the keyboard, something else needs looked at.
