I have had Mcafee anti virus software preinstalled onto my computer for over a year now and finally i had this message pop up by me at the desktop saying that my Mcafee anti virus software has expired and your protection has been disabled from the computer. Does this mean i must start paying for this service now in order to get it updated? Or is this still a free service?I`m really at a loss as to what to do .I tried going to the mcafee site and it will not tell me if i can get it updated for free. please help thank you much :)

LOL I don't know why they have that pop up but along time ago there was a issue with that messages and how to turn the warning off...

But if you keep the signatures updated you will never see that messages... when I go to update my backup drive I get that mesages sometimes if I wait to long inbetween backups.. once I load the new signature it goes away.....

I am using mcafee V_Shield with windows98SE IE6.0

the scan engines is 4.1.60 and the signatures are up to 4.0.4194

they have updates once a week sometimes more

I have links on my web site to mcafee look in antivirus page

Thanks
Mac!!!

This Is just my opinion
So if it stinks wait for another one
Cause I'm no expert

Brett,

Yes, if you got an (OEM) version bundled with your computer when you purchased it.

The automatic updeates are disabled, but I believe you can stiill download the DAT files for free.

Not so with Norton, it's entirely disabled.

true guys,
but what bugs me is this, my mcafee AV ver 5 shows "No infected items found" for a file that RegRun claims to find a trojan called St5unst classified as dangerous!!:
Remote Access / Destructive trojan / Virus dropper
It copies itself to c:\recycled to avoid detection by some antivirus programs.

Now who am I supposed to believe. That file tried to add itself to my startup group after I installed a keyboard utility.

I read some where that Mcafee intentionally does NOT alert the user if it is a trojan used by the FBI, is this true? they just let the govt spy on you...... hmmmmm!.
And you know what good uses the govt has for that information .... it must be a joke I hope.

Now how do I scan the Recycle Bin with this software ; it does not list it on the SCAN folder list.
