I am looking a for an editor of *.reg files. My idea is a program that would behave more or less in the same way as regedit but which would work with exported parts of registry. Is there anything like this around? If yes, which of these programs would you recommend?
Thanks,
Michael

Have a look at Resplendent Registrar it has the ability to edit REG files as if they were the registry.

Speaking of RR, has anyone had problems with the latest 3.0 version?
I've been happily using the 2.05 for some time, and I installed the latest version expecting no problems.
However, in this one, I'm having a strange problem:
I can create rename and alter keys, I can create registry values, and assign them a given value, but I can't rename the values themselves: "error renaming value".
RR support isn't doing much about it.
I got this after waiting for an entire week:
"Dear Tony,
Thanks for your reports. We are currently looking into the messages you have sent us and hope to provide an answer or a fix soon.
Greetings,
Daniel Terhell Resplendence Sp "
This was 17 days ago. I mailed them a couple more times but got no reply.
Although I was fortunately able to restore my former version, I'm curious to know whether anyone else has had the same problem.
Anyhow, if you plan to upgrade, be sure to keep a copy of your former version.
You never know...

I spoke to Daniel from Resplendence about a week ago and he mentioned that a new release would be coming out in the next 10-14 days to fix some outstanding bugs. Hopefully that will cover the bug you mentioned as well.

Thanks Simon,
I sure hope it does.
I love working with this program, and I consider RR the RR (Rolls Royce :) ) of Registry editors, and would hate to think support wasn't up to par.

Tony,
Like you I find Resplendent Registrar excellent. I haven't upgraded yet so I can't comment on the latest version.
Unfortunately I found that the support was also lacking when I had an issue a few months ago. Possibly it is a one man band and there are resource issues as Daniel was also the person who contacted me. The initial response was pretty quick but when it didn't resolve my problem it was difficult to get any more information from them. I eventually discovered what the problem was through trial and error (I was trying to open XP hives on a W2K machine and needed to update regedit to the XP version).
For anyone else who is considering using Resplendent Registrar don't let these comments put you off as it is an excellent utility and I have had no problems other than the one I decribed above.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
I think it may indeed be an (almost) one man band.
As I live in Holland as well, I thought I'd phone their offices in Amsterdam in order to get a sign of life out of them, and got to speak to a lady who said Daniel wasn't their, but she was sure he was going to contact me presently.
Last time I called (a week ago or so, a gentleman there told me he was in India (if I remember right), and wasn't going to be back any time soon...
Anyhow, after hearing what Simon learned, I trust that things will be put right sooner or later.
Cheers, Tony

I trust it will.
Fortunately I was able to put the old version back again, or I would have to make do with good old Regedit... :)

Yes, it's true the latest version has a problem renaming values when running on Windows 95 or 98.
Version 3.01 can be expected at the beginning of May.
Thanks all,
Daniel Terhell

I just downloaded and installed the 3.01 upgrade.
Unfortunately, I get "an I/O error occurred while installing the file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file."
(Sigh...)
Has anyone else tried to install the 3.01 (just out) on Win 98?

After two more futile attempts yesterday, at the advice of Resplendence Sp's Daniel Terhell, I tried downloading and installing v 3.01 once again today, and this time I was successful .
Everything's working fine now.
