Under My Computer > Properties there's the info about the processor. I have a Celeron 266 MHz, but Windows report it as Pentium II Processor and Intel MMX (TM) Technology. How can I change the information so that it is correct?
Thank,
Michael

mnovak,
That would be located here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Description\System\Cen tralProcessor\0

Well, Celeron IS a Pentium II processor , just a cheaper grade minus the cache that's all.
Try the Intel Processor ID Utility .. pretty damn accurate with all the bells & whistles!

Just so folks don't get disenchanted with the Celeron, beginning with the 300A, Intel wisened up and put cache back on, small but made 50% improvement over the plain 300.

Yes, I know. But I feel a bit uneasy about changing anything under the \Hardware\ key. Can I change the values? Or is it that the value is put into the registry on the boot up? (Then it would be of no use changing it since it would change back again.)
Thanks,
Michael

One thing to note: Those Reg entries are based on how Windows identified the system during setup. The Celeron *does* identify as a PII w/MMX.
The danger in changing these, is that software looks at these keys for info, during setup. If you change it, you may run the risk of a program not wanting to install because you don't meet the "Minimum Requirements".
Just something to consider.

I verified on a W2K system that the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\Cen tralProcessor\0 key is dynamic and is set during boot by NTDETECT. As Windows 98 doesn't use NTDETECT then it may be different but I doubt it.
I would just leave it as it is.

I manually added the processor speed to my Win98 machines to make it easier to keep track. It shows up on Properties of My Computer. I also was looking for a way to add it with a .reg file but haven't come up with one yet.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Description\System\Cen tralProcessor\0
"VendorIdentifier"="Authentic AMD K6-2/550MHz"

I checked on Windows 98 at home and like Bert says it is persistent and does not get overwritten on every boot. You could modify it to reflect what you want but BDragon already posted a warning regarding some applications looking at this string. Maybe Bert would be able to tell if he has had any issues with this.
Cheers

Don't know if you have it on W98 but worth a try:
Start/Run/ type winrep, OK, Options, choose Collected Information tab...X out of app.

Works in Win98SE. Even works making a shortcut to winrep.exe.

but how accurate is winrep.
For example I have a Pentium III 550 (Intel Utility shows it as 551Mhz), but winrep gave me the following:
CPUTYPE=6
COMPSPEED=540 MHz
so who's right!
Another thing is this below, my TCP & NDIS are listed twice each for some reason? :
NETTRANS=NDISWAN;Fast Infrared Protocol;TCP/IP;TCP/IP;NDISWAN;
do I have duplicates?? ... can this be?
or may be because this is how a 2 channel ISDN shows up on there?
