I am having various problems with IE 6 and was going to try to go back to IE 5.5. The revert back to previous config. in the add/remove is blanked out. I have downloaded 5.5 but when i try to set it up it tells me that a newer version is not installed and that installation will stop. Any suggestions? Thanks

motzmaniac,

Have you ttied the Repair option?

If you don't have a directory named C:\Program Files\Uninstall Information with at least some of the following information, there is no way to go back.

IE UserData
IE.HKCUZoneInfo
IE.HKLMZoneInfo
IE40.Assoc
IE40.Browser
IE40.BrowseUI
IE40.Comctl32
IE40.Controls
IE40.Shdoc401
IE40.Shell
IE40.UserAgent
IEContentAdvisor.Assoc
IEHomePageInfo
JETES
MDAC_CORE27
mshtml.DllReg
mshtml.Install
MSXML_MDAC
OutlookExpress

I have tried the repair option with no luck. On some websites, some links dont work and it says error on page at the bottom. Sometimes I get blank pages as well. I do have many of those files that you listed.

Sorry, that should have read:
Have you tried the Restore option?

Try these links also:

The problem with "restore prior version" being greyed out occurs when uninstall information is absent, parts of it are missing, or if there's no previous version of IE to revert to.

So there's not always a simple solution to this.

This procedure has worked for some people:

Open C:\Program files\Internet Explorer.
Right click the folder Uninstall information.
Click 'Properties', and uncheck the hidden mode, and press 'OK'
Now go to C:\Program files\Internet Explorer\Setup, and Run 'setup.exe'

However, if any of the first causes apply, this won't work.

Incidentally, what exactly is the problem you're having?

Good luck, Tony

I am having many script error problems. That seems to go away when I disable Norton Internet Security. Also, many pages are loading incorrectly and have a message at the bottom left that reads"error on page" If the page loads all, most of the links dont work. I dont know if its AOL or IE or IS or what. Some pages have a no Java link which seems to work. Thanks for your guys help

I actually succeeded in uninstalling IE6 from my computer, and then installed IE5.5 with far fewer problems. Anyone (with W9x) that would like to completely delete IE from their hard drive: check this out http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html
