When starting my computer, the task manager shows IEXPLORER.EXE running in the processes even though I see no IE windows open anywhere. This is causing adds to pop up at random intervals on my computer. Does anybody know what is starting this and how I can get rid of it?

David,
Then you'll need to find out how it's loading at startup.
Download msconfig for Windows 2000 here:

Or go to Start>Run, and type regedit. navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices
Also look in the Start>ProgramsStartup folder.
Also, go to Start>Run, and type compmgmt.msc, click the Services and Application, then the Services entries.

This is happening a lot lately.
Let's have a look at the applications that load automatically as Windows starts up:
Go to Start/run, and type Msinfo32, followed by OK.
Go to Software Environment/Startup Programs.
Now click Edit/'Select all', and then 'copy'
Paste the contents in your post.
Cheers, Tony
