How do I get IE5.0 on Win98 SE to open new windows in maximized mode?
I am currently doing this manually and it's a hassle as I sometimes open as many as ten windows at a time during a session.

Hi,
Try it this way:
Start IE5, right click any URL and select Open in a New Window.
Go back to the first IE5 window you opened and close it.
Return to the second window and manually drag it to fill the screen.
(Do not use the maximize button)
Press the Ctrl button, and close this second window, holding the Ctrl button depressed, using 'close' in the File menu (important!).
All windows should now open maximized.
And the trick is NOT to use the maximize button, for that's a temporary setting which will not be remembered.

Here is another option:
Stretching the screen will work until the next time a pop-up ads shows up and that will change it to the new size but if you want a 'more' permanant solution then follow the lengthy but simple instructions below:
I followed the below instructions and I have not had to reset it in about a year.
In a nutshell: Create a shortcut, resize the shortcut, rename the shortcut and store the shortcut.
In detail:
1. Right click on blank area of this or any other web page, Select Create Shortcut.
2. Go to new desk top shortcut and double click on it.
3. Click on the title bar and drag it to the upper most, top left hand corner.
4. Place cursor on the bottom right hand corner (to get the angled double arrows) and drag it to the lower most, bottom right hand corner.
5. Hold down Shift key and close the window by clicking on the X in the top right hand corner.
6. Right click on the shortcut and select rename. Rename it frm2new.htm
7. Drag the new desk top shortcut to C:\Windows\Web and you are done.
Note: On a rare occaision something will cause the New Window to open not maximized again. Simply go to the C:\Windows\Web folder, double click on the frm2new.htm file, stretch it out as explained before and you will be back in business.

Sorry about the late reply.
I tried your method on my office computer on Friday as well as on my home computers over the weekend but it did not work for me as I would like.
The first part of the procedure is the same as that described by TonyKlien and it works only for that particular session. If I shut down and the restart IE again, the new windows are back to the original size ie. "not maximized".
I seem to remember reading an article I read in a magazine about a reg hack that will solve the problem permanently, but could not remember the details.
Any other ideas?
Thank you very much.

You probably mean deleting the value Window_Placement in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main?
I don't think that works for windows openend by clicking hyperlinks, just for the main window.
However, as a workaround, here's a javascript which adds an option 'open maximized' to your context menu, when rightclicking on a hyperlink: <a target="_blank" href=http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/MaxLink.zip>http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/MaxLink.zip</a>
Good luck, Tony

I used to have that problem too with IE5.5 and stayed after I upgraded to ver 6 for some reason recently it fixed itself (opens maximized now!) I think after I did the "repair IE" option then closed it maximized ... it remembered the size at next boot.
It even works if I switch screen resolution with IE running
try the repair IE it might do it for you

Tony,
I tried the MaxLink jscript workaround and it works fine. Thanks for your help.
gangsta,
I could not find IE5 listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. I then went to the Microsoft site (Sorry, I do not know how to do a clickable link):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q194177
where it describes starting the IE Repair Tool from a command prompt. But when I tried it, I was not able to access the Repair Tool as it was greyed out.

You're welcome.
As for IE Repair being greyed out, it happens, and I don't know whether it's possible to correct that.
But as you're running IE 5.0, it would be wise to upgrade to let's say <a target="_blank" href=http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie501sp2/default.asp>Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2</a> anyway.
Good luck, Tony

Did you save the setup files for IE in the C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files directory?
If they;re not there, I believe that option would be grayed.
You could go to the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder and double-click the ie5setup.exe file.

re-install ie 5 or just go to IE6 better.
At least this way if you continue to have problems the Repair option will be there as long as you keep the IE6 setup folder on your HD.

I just upgraded my IE5.0 to IE5.01 Service Pack 2 and then run IE Repair. After rebooting, all new windows opened are now maximized.
Thanks guys, for all your help.

Hi Guys
Bit late but here's another solution which works well and gives a 'Full screen option' as well.
Also adds an option to open from the IE 'Tools' menu.
