int explorer 6 or outlookexpress downloads somthing for 10 mins or so practically everytime i'm on the net.
xp is fully updated so should'nt be that ,norton tells me when its doing something , but whatever downloads does'nt tell me.
sometimes when its finished [leds stop flashing on modem] the comp tells me i no longer have a connection [and i have] and nothing works.
anyone have any ideas?. paul

Could it be that you have windows update running automatically? This would explain why it was downloading in the background, but this should happen just by connecting, not by opening IE6 or OE6, does it?

I think Killermink has it right, unless you downloaded some sort of "dialer" program.

To turn off Automatic Update, go to Start>Run, and type compmgmt.msc. Double-click the Services and Application entry, then the Services entry. Look for Automatic Updates, click properties, click the Stop button and choose Disabled under Startup type.

Also, right-click on My Computer, choose properties, click the Automatic Updates tab and select Turn off Automatic Updateing. If it's grey-out after changiung the first item, then you're successful.
