I created a startup disk through the Add/Remove Programs section of my computer. I activated it and it took me to C:\dir per request. Did it work as expected and to the extent that it should by accomplishing this? Or should I have tried additional steps? Are there other files that should be added to the disk itself? Help appreciated! Thanks,

What you'll need (if you want to re-install Windows again, is a startup disk that contains the neccessary CD-ROM drivers so you can change directory at the prompt to the CD-ROM drive, then type setup.
You can find a bootdisk here:
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/bootdisk.htm>http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/bootdisk.htm</a>
or do a search in any major search engine for:
95 bootdisk with CD-ROM support

Jimmie:
Go to the below website and read the article on how to create a Windows 95/98 startup disk. The steps are easy to follow.

CaptainSpeleo; Thank you for site reference. As I understand it, I have to have the proper CDRom. Therein lies the problem. I have my original (95B) CD that came with the computer. But when inserted it states there is a newer version of 95b installed. I guess when I had some work done the tech used his CD. When I insert the CDRom that I have, I am alerted to the fact that: "This CD is from an older version of Windows then presently using. Setup functionality will be disabled." Thanks,

Jimmie:
Click Start - Find - Files And Folders, type in *.SYS and allow the list of files to appear. Check each file until you find the one that pertains to your CDROM.
Click Start - Run, type in SYSEDIT, then click OK. Bring the CONFIG.SYS file to the front, then see if the CDROM command is listed with the SYS file name.
You can try having someone make you a startup disk from their Windows 98 computer. It will contain generic CDROM drivers that will work with most CDROM drives.
The CD that you have is probably a "companion CD" and will give you that message when you insert it.

OSR = OEM Service Release.
There were 2 versions of 95B, OSR2.0 and OSR2.1.
Then there was 95C or OSR2.5.
And to further confuse the OS, starting with Internet Explorer 4.01, more changes were made to the OS, which can give the same message about a 'newer' OS.
