HD dma (W98)

i read somewhere that activating dma to hard disk could enahnce performance of my pc, i tried this but now the pc freezes for a few seconds when starting up or loading some app, and if i am using winamp it starts to click or just stops for a few seconds.

i measured the speed of the hd with nero and went from 3500KB/s to almost 8000KB/s so i would like to keed this dma thing on

is that a normal side effect?
what can i do to avoid that?

are you asking if that happens when i load every program?
the answer would be yes, but only with the ones that require more hd activity, like word or excel. that also happens when copying large files .

tnx for answering scroll, but it doesnt matter anymore, i updated the ide drivers, and the problem was solved, now it works just great
