OK, well I know this may be blasphemous on this board, but I really do prefer the linux style command prompt -- and anyone who uses linux commands regularly will probably think the same thing.

I was wondering if there were any way to edit some sort of preferences or add some alias lines to some file or something so that I can be able to issue basic linux commands in a DOS prompt.

For example, I ALWAYS type ls instead of dir. I then have to get that stupid message saying ls isnt recognized, then re-type in dir. Can't help it. And the nuisance isnt going to go away either, because I work in both Lin and Win.

Any way to make that sort of aliasing?

Thanks,
Mike

Don't know enough about Linux but would it be possible to create a simple .bat file containing, for example, DIR and name it ls.bat? [As long as the .bat was in the path or at the root and did not duplicate a Linux file name.]

Why don't you just use Linux then? ;-)
Ok - that didn't help :-D. In fact, I remember having to install a runtime version of X-Windows on WinNT. X-Windows added all the Unix commands. I don't remember where to dig for it, but that's a start, isn't it?
