Hi guys,

I have a dual boot environment with Win98se and Win2K. Got problems with Win98 and would like to wipe it and start over again(format drive c: and reinstall win98se); however, I don't want to effect the Win2K system.

A friend of mine told me that there's a few things that must be done before and after the reinstallation of Win98 to be able to access it and as well as the win2k. He also said that after a clean install of win98se I might lose the master boot record in win2k and won't be able to access it in startup. He's not sure about this though and he never have done this before. So if anyone have this experienced, Pls. I desperately need your help.

I'll be glad if someone can run through the steps for me. Thanks a million in advance to any posts.

Your friend is correct. If you re-install Windows 98 then you will lose the ability to dual boot. I haven't tried this out but I believe if you install Windows 98 and then re-install Windows 2000 in the same folder as before it should work okay.

Maybe someone else who has done this can comment.

That's exactly right. Reinstall 2k over itself (you won't lose anything if you choose the reinstall option) after you've installed 98.

That's assuming 2k is on a separate partition than windows 98. If it is, formatting C won't affect your 2k Operating system.

Hi there, thanks for your comments. Yes, I guess that would work 'reinstalling win2k' but The thing is i dont want to reinstall my win2k again coz I've got 30 gig of files in there. Plus, more than 20 softwares that r installed. I mean I dont want to reinstall those softwares again. Do u?.

Thanks

You should be able to reinstall Windows 2000 and keep all those gigs and programs as well. Just reinstall the OS without formatting the hard drive, and it should update/correct all System files, and leave all other files untouched.

Hi there, I just want to make sure. Kind of confused a bit. I was talking to a good friend of mine and told me that I might reinstall all the programs again once I reinstall the windows 2000 on top of it. He said it's because it will delete all the dll's and replace them with new ones.
Any comments on this? I'll be glad to get your opinion about this. Thanks in advance.

If the dll's are overwritten they may be replaced by lower version dll's. You may need to reinstall ie Explorer and update windows with the latest service pack.

Theoretically it is safe to reinstall win2k- but who knows? This is microsoft we are talking about!!
