One of our field staff goes into Windows Explorer and there is a mysterious gray window looking thing and it has an X and you click it and then it shuts down your Explorer Bar and when you go to View, Explorer Bar, All Folders everything is fine. But once you close Explorer and go back in...the gray window is back.

This fix, originally posted by Mosaic1, I think, often appears to solve this one:
Copy the bold to Notepad:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]
@="Explorer Band"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOCVW.DLL"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories\{00021493-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Save as Explorer.reg, doubleclick, and answer 'yes' to have it merged into your registry.
Reboot.
Good luck, Tony

Thanks Tony, but that didn't seem to help either. That gray window is still there. Even after closing the gray window, going back up and going to the View menu, Explorer bar and telling it All Folders again, the gray window comes back.

Tony was right, Mosaic had it. I saved it also and see one small difference. Before doing the registry import
Open the registry and navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
In the right pane look for this entry and delete it.
ExplorerBar

Hello,
It's a funny thing about the differences in Internet Explorer Versions and the consequences. Yes. The Gray Panel is usually due to a problem with that key. I tracked that down to help someone at another Forum a while back. That was after I had installed IE 6.
But here's the thing. In All the other versions of IE, including IE 6 the InProcServer32 file is shdocvw.dll for the Explorer Band
But in IE5.5 the InProcServer32 is Browseui.dll
I recently dropped back down to IE5.5 to try and help someone out. I found that the removal and/or restoration of the same CLSID key had no effect on IE 5.5 Even though this person had the same Grey Explorer Band. His CLSID key was in tact.
If you have IE 5.5, please post back. If you have merged that file, you now have an error in your registry.
Continuing, I looked at the other BANDS and found in IE6 the Media Band's InProcServer32 is Browseui.dll. I tried Graying out the Media Band Panel by removing the CLSID and it had no effect.
In conclusion. From what I have observed, The various Bands whose InProcServer32 is Shdocvw.dll can be repaired by restoring the CLSID if the Gray Panel is present. Or greyed out by removing it.
But those whose InProcServer32 is Browseui.dll cannot.
I have yet to trace the culprit in those. Here is the correct Explorer Band CLSID key for IE5.5
Copy the bold to Notepad. Save as Band.reg Double click to merge into the Registry
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]
@="Explorer Band"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\BROWSEUI.DLL"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories\{00021493-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
The only difference in this version is the InProcServer32 as far as I can tell.
