my windows2000 server is very very slow Its a 128mb ram with a 20gb hardisk memory. I have been desperately trying to improve its speed for the past 10 days.I tried the defragmenter and deleted all temp files . even the startup is slow .
pls help with all the methods to increase the system speed. To put it simply , by click of a mouse , the programs should flash in lightening speed.

Thankyou

Yours sincerely

128MB RAM is probably not enough for a server, so my suggestion would be to upgrade the RAM on the system to a minimum of 256MB. With the low cost of RAM these days you should really install as much as you can. Also if you are running low on disk space you are also going to see performance problems.

Are you really trying to run a server w/ a 20GB HD? and 128MB?

Get a lot more RAM like 1GB and a 40GB HD would help... also if its any thing lower than a P3 dont hope for too much..

Just a comment: I run several version of Windows at various times and see that, when comparing speeds, WinNT4/2000/XP always is a shade slower than Win9x when opening the same programs. The NTFS format of the hard drive does not help the speed as FAT32 is faster. I guess if a person wants greater stability in the OS, a sacrifice has to be made in the speed. Personally, I prefer the stability as I have had as many as 8 programs running at one time. Guaranteed to crash a Win9x machine.

Now, one thing that can slow down a computer is heat. If the cooling fans get too much dust on the blades they will slow down or fail, or if the power supply can't provide enough to the board or drives, things get hot and slow down. I always check the hardware first if a client complains of slow.

senthil1,

Are you really using the "server" as a server? How many machines are you controlling?

Remove unnneccessary services that you don't need.

I would suggest 256MB of RAM also.
