On checking my neighbours computer which runs with ME, I found that he had Internet Explorer 5.5, which appeared to be working, although it was not listed in the Add/Remove list. He also had Outlook Express 6, which was listed in the Add/Remove list. Outlook Express 6 does not come with Internet Explorer 5.5, so there is obviously something wrong. I got him to try downloading Internet Explorer 6 from Microsoft, but it won't download. I also got him to try to install Internet Explorer 6 from a CD, but that didn't install either. I don't want to uninstall his Outlook Express 6 if I can help it, any other ideas please.

If there are problems, yes. Are there any?
Did you determine the version of IE by going to Help>About Internet Explorer?

I never recommend anyone install IE using a CD. You most like ly are not getting the latest version and it may be a customizd version of IE from some ISP.

Thanks for that. I checked both programs from Help-About. Internet Explorer 5.5. Outlook Express 6. The trouble comes by not being able to get the Windows Updates to download from the Update Site. Several other error messages come up at odd intervals. I still don't know how he managed to get Outlook Express 6 without Internet Explorer 6. The other thing of course is that he is unable to get Internet Explorer to check itself, as it's not in Add/Remove. I have tried installing Internet Explorer 5.5 again, but it won't install because Outlook Express 6 is there. I expect I'll just uninstall Outlook Express for him and start again.

In the left pane, double-click the WindowsUpdate folder.

Press the Delete key (or right-click and select Delete). Click Yes to confirm.

Note: Deleting the file wuhistv3.log will clear the entire Windows Update download history. This is not recommended, as you will have no record of previous downloads. The steps above delete all files with the exception of wuhistv3.log.
