Well, If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Unless, that is, you don't know it is broke, yet.

Did you recently install a new/different card (ie, video card, nic, sound card, etc.)? If so, it might be conflicting with the IRQ of another device, and all you need to do is move the new card to the next slot on your motherboard. Also, you should check the website of the new device, for the latest drivers.

If that isnt applicable, try this:
Right click My Computer, choose Properties, click the Device Manager tab, note any devices that have a color flag (either a yellow sign with '!' or red with 'X'), now choose View Devices by Connection, double-click Computer, choose Interrupt request (IRQ). Note on paper, what is assigned to each IRQ (ie, 00=System timer).
Click OK to close the Computer Properties.
Now, choose View devices by type, click the (+) sign by each device, then double-click each device listed. Look at Device status of each, and note if any has a conflict. You might also want to download the latest drivers for each device in your system, including Chipset drivers for your particular chipset. It never hurts to have the latest drivers.

Try deleting the c:\windows\hwinfo.dat file and run it again.

The IRQ Steering problems happens frequently with ME (and is nothing to worry about), not sure why Win98 is giving that info.

Thanks for the response. All devices chequed out OK, and I've updated drivers. The Hardware Utility still shows problems, but as all is running I'll leave well enough alone.

Deleted the hwinfo.dat file -- had no effect. Should I restore this file?

No, one will be re-created when you run hwinfo
