View Full Version : MS Office Bar problems

I'm helping someone who's complaining about Quickview popping up when clicking a MS Office Shortcut Bar button.

Now this is a known issue, so I advised him to run this one:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\QuickView]

After doing that he said, that WinZip now started up when pressing a OB button.

He now also got WinZip when trying to create a shortcut on the desktop...

This is starting to get strange...

I then asked him to post his HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\* key.

This he did. It's

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Br iefcaseMenu]
@="{85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Ex plorerCompressionMenu]
@="{764BF0E1-F219-11ce-972D-00AA00A14F56}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Wi nZip]
@="{E0D79300-84BE-11CE-9641-444553540000}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{d 72e3920-f452-11cf-8a0b-00805f02b9e9}]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ BriefcasePage]
@="{85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ CryptoSignMenu]
@="{7444C719-39BF-11D1-8CD9-00C04FC29D45}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ {1F2E5C40-9550-11CE-99D2-00AA006E086C}]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ {3EA48300-8CF6-101B-84FB-666CCB9BCD32}]

And only then he told me he was running NT, an operating system I'm not familiar with.

Anyhow, this reg key doesn't look as if anything there could cause this, but I advised him anyway to edit [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Wi nZip]
@="{E0D79300-84BE-11CE-9641-444553540000}" by inserting a minus sign in front of the CLSID.

After doing that he says his Antivirus starts up when clicking a button..

The only thing I notice, in comparing his HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\* to mine, is that I have a subkey Shell, whereas he doesn't.

Could that mean something?

And if not, where else could we look in the NT registry?

Thanks Tony

Hey Tony,

I had a problem in the past with the shortcut bar as well. Have him/her right click on the shortcut bar and select refresh. Do the same for any other bars that are created.

Pat,

Do you think it could be as simple as that?

It's hard to believe....
And he also had WinZip starting up when making a Desktop shortcut.
That doesn't really seem related to Shortcut Bar buttons.

But I'll ask him to do that.

The only reason I thought of it was because I ran into the exact same problem. I remembered seeing the refresh option and I tried it and all was well. You're right about the shortcut.. It doesn't seem to relate. I figure one step at a time.

Allright, I tell him to try it out.

Who knows? Stranger things have happened.... :)

Thanks! Tony

And should the Shell subkey be there, or doesn't it matter if it's absent?

Well, no joy, I'm afraid.

He created the Shell subkey, which predictably didn't solve anything, and refreshed the Shortcut Bars, which didn't turn out to be the solution either.

Anyone got an idea what could cause this, other than a subkey in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*?

Tony, navigate to this link, check complete thread, and see if the following MKB article will help as it did one of the posters in this article..

Microsoft.public.office.misc

MKB Article

Thanks Smitty, but read my original question, and you'll see that was the first thing I advised him to do.
Next take a look at the contents of his HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\* subkey I posted afterwards.

You'll see that the 2nd MS article doesn't apply either, unfortunately.

Sorry TK

Original problem was fixed and spawned second problem, thought it might be similar...

This thread is worth a "QuickView" though...pun intended.

Thanks Smitty,

I'd already advised him to get rid of all temp files (including the hidden ones), as I know from experience this can create problems with the MS Office Shortcut Bar.

However, not exactly of this type.

Hi Tony,

Well, I'm really sure you need my input! /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif I don't know much, but what came to my mind is unchecking Quickview in Windows Setup > Accessories? I don't know whether they use that feature, but I know I don't.

Thanks Carol, but it's not necessary to uninstall QuickView.

As a matter of fact, it's a very useful tool, and by itself not the cause of this problem.

Thanks again! :) Tony

Tony,
Windows does not have a Shell Subkey under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*

It can be created to add an entry to the context menus of all file types. That is why you have it. You must have done a tweak. Possibly Open with on right click or open all unknowns in Notepad?
Or added Quickview to all file types' context menus?

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Wi nZip]
@="{E0D79300-84BE-11CE-9641-444553540000}" by inserting a minus sign in front of the CLSID.
Sorry. That's the normal Winzip entry. He can put it back by using the settings in Winzip.
Too strange. It sounds like Windows thinks the shellex key is the shell key. As each entry is removed, the next is taking over as if being set to default on the Shell entry. Many AV are on the context menu.

Has he done any Registry Tweaking lately? Any changes at all? Installs or uninstalls?

Have him look at
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile

Not certain if anyting odd will be there. But it's one place to start.
He might try to restore file associations. I know there's a command for it, but am not sure if it applies to NT.

Has he tried uninstalling Winzip yet? However, if this runs true to form, it sounds like the next in line (the AV) will take its place in this behavior.

You may as well have him look here too.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

Hi Mo,

You're right about the Shell subkey. It's a leftover from a tweak, and probably one that I (incompletely) removed because of a conflict with the Shortcut Bar myself...

Strange one, this, don't you think?

Especially the fact that when you get rid of one thing, another one pops up.

I'll have him check the lnk and lnkfile entries as you advised, as well as the corresponding CLSID. Maybe there's something there that shouldn't be.

As for the 'rundll setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection etcetera' tweak, I think that only applies to Win95/98, so it might not be a good idea to apply that one.

Thanks, Tony

I've just been told the problem was resolved by uninstalling Norton Clean Sweep 2002...

Go figure...

And now we'll never know what exactly it was that caused this to happen.

Anyhow, thanks everyone for helping out!

Cheers, Tony
