I recently visited family member who uses AOL. Only get there about once a year, and
I am curious to note the string of outdated AOL programs still on his hard drive. I check download and temp folders of old versions, and they are empty, so why doesn't AOL inform
you that you can remove these outdated program foldlers?
WORSE YET ! ....I was doing general maintenance and cleanup, and found that the AOL
Temporary Internet Cache settings was set to more than 1.4 GIG !!!.....that coincidently
happened to be nearly equal to what showed as "unused" or available portion of his 3 gig
drive !!?? My relative is not computer savvy, he did not know how to adjust this setting, and
had NEVER seen the panels that I pulled up to show how this is done !! When I went into
his temporary internet file folders (there were many) , I could never view the contents
because it seemed incapable of displaying all that were there, but I could here the drive
trying to gather them all to show! I believe these cache files were scattered all over his
available drive space. If I clicked on "empty (or delete)" these files, it again just got bogged
down in trying to manage them all !! So, what I did was to set the cache size to 20meg,
which is more than enough, ....then adjusted defragged his disk. Is this AOL's idea of
"Faster" with each newer version, even though you're running the same system and internet
connection you had before? By the way, it also took close to 2 minutes just for AOL to load,
then at shutdown it always asks for MORE cache space...for "ART", and had been doing so
even before I reset the cache size.

I'm now an Ex AOLer, I'm happy to say. /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif

That ART is stored online, and they can go to Settings > preferences > Fonts and Graphics and adjust the size. It's a GOOD idea to have it set to at least 30mb.

BUT it's also recommended to occassionaly set it down to 1mb, sign off, and it'll empty all those Art files. You do have to remember to set it back up, when you sign on again! I've neglected to do that, and it wasn't long before I got locked up.

There's nothing wrong with setting Temp. internet files down as far as 5mb. That has nothing to do with the Art files.

Btw, I don't have link handy, but there is a small patch called AOL Speed. I applied that, and it made a big difference! You'll easily find it by doing a Google search "AOL Speed". The link will come up........check it out! NOTE: not for AOL 7
