View Full Version : MS Paint won't open .bmps (WME)

Hello.
I've been trying to figure this one out for the longest time now. It used to open .bmps just fine. Then about December I went to click on the .bmp I wanted to edit and SURPRISE! It didn't open. It brought up the OPEN WITH box. Fine, I choose PAINT and make sure the ALWAYS OPEN WITH THIS PROGRAM box was checked.
Well, it opened up in MS Paint. I figured, problem solved. Two days later, went to edit another .bmp and YEP...same problem EVEN THOUGH IT's properly associated with MS Paint.
So I went to the File types box and selected paint and did everything manual in there to make sure there was no mistake that I had associated it properly to MS Paint. Went back to the .bmp and YEP...did it yet again!
I've been trying to figure it out, been asking around and also trying to use registry fixers and healer programs but to no avail.
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?
Regards,
AshFalling

My default program for .bmp is not MSPaint but within my registry I find two connections to the program I use.

I suggest you take a look to see what program is selected in this last key to open PI3 Image/bitmap and then go to that programs Options or preferences to deselect it from always retaining or recapturing the .bmp association.
Hope this helps.

You could try this:
Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs.
Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories, and then click Details.
Click the 'Paint' check box to clear it, and click OK twice.
Go to Start/Run/Regedit, drill down to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt Version\Applets\Wordpad, rightclick "Paint", and choose 'delete' from the context menu.
Restart the computer.
Now go back to Add-remove/Windows Setup/Accessories, and then click Details.
Click the 'Paint' check box to select it, and click OK twice once again.
Reboot.
Good luck, Tony
