There was a thread a while back about this that ended without a resolution so I thought I would try again. We are trying to lock down the network and computers from prying students. I have disabled everything I can, including context menus and the ability to modify the start menu, which mens no right-clicking on the start menus or taskbar. However, if the student double-clicks the "Programs >" icon in the start menu an explorer window pops up with the contents of the custom Programs folder on the network. Of course, the students have permission to access this folder and the adjacent Startup folder with the logon script. So they are free to run the scripts that enable the internet or to roam the network at will. Granted most of the network is secured, but I would like to prevent the explorer window from opening in the first place. Any suggestions?

It may be easiest to simply put all the shortcuts you have within the programs menu onto the desktop, as we have done at my school, and disable any usage of the start menu for anything other than logging on/off. If this is not an option for you I am affraid I do not have the answer, though It would be nice to use the start menu, I've never liked a cluttered desktop. :)

Thanks for the idea. I had thought of using Explorer in kiosk mode before but didn't like the way it worked out. But your post got me to thinking in a new direction and now I have the students almost completely locked down. Just one more little problem I can't seem to solve.

If you remove this clsd
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4622AD11-FF23-11d0-8D34-00A0C90F2719}]
@="Start Menu"
the users can't interact with the start menu at all.
Draw back..
They will have to c/a/d to logoff/shutdown/reboot

I was going to start another thread about this, but since your here...
The other little problem: Any idea how I can remove the "up one directory level" button from the Open and Save dialogs in Office programs?
And in reference to your post: Where would I go for the logoff if I disabled the ability to interact with the taskbar?(nt4.0/win2K) I know the rundll32 commands for win9x, but not the equivelent for nt4.0/win2K.

Please don't start any other post when it's the same topic.
For up one... I have no idea.
I thought your original post on this matter was related to 2000. I wasn't aware that it was for NT 4.0 Im sorry that I couldn't meet your needs.
You're Welcome!

For some reason I can't modify my recent post.
If I recall the task manager in NT offers the Logoff option.

Duh, brain-fart. I knew that. Thanks.
And, yes, it was for Win2K, but if I can lock down things like I want I plan to institute the changes on my other labs (NT4.0 and Win95). Right now my Win2K lab is The Great Experiment. A good place for it since the more intellegent (and therefore more slippery) kids are enrolled in the classes that use this lab.

Duh again. I just realize that "c/a/d" = Ctrl+Alt+Del. I thought you were refering to drive letters, thus the 'where do I go' post.
Man, this thread is making me feel stupid!

You should see a few of my past postings :)
what do you think about the start menu idea? Is it do-able?

I like it. I think it is.
And Holy Cow! I just realize I am now an "Associate". I think we can all see from this thread the these lables don't necessarily have any bearing on the persons skills. /images/forums/icons/blush.gif

Yes. You're right. Hit the designated amount and you're a genius. I've caught and learned from some of your posts.
