I am running Windows 98SE with AOL. Lately every time I try to connect to AOL, the AOL program runs setup to find a modem. I have now found out why. Each time I switch on my computer the modem is connected to the other COM port.

In other words, at the moment my modem is on COM3 (and AOL knows that) and will remain so until I switch the computer off. BUT when I switch back on again the modem will be on COM4. AOL will be looking at COM3, where it was before, sees there is now no modem so once again runs setup to look for a modem which it will find this time on COM4!!

This will all happen again when I switch off and back on again.

Does anyone know how I can stop the modem jumping between COM3 and COM4?

Not for sure, but you can try to uninstall and reinstall the modem altogether, see if that will get it to stick with a certain COM.

I use AOL..... Actually, I think they owe me a paycheck for all the help I've given ppl. on various problems. /images/forums/icons/mad.gif

My suggestion is to do a search for in Find > Files or Folders for the global.org file and delete all that are found. Those are your connection settings for your modem.

Then run setup again, delete your modem in the window that comes up. Then choose add modem, and AOL should now detect your modem. That should work.

I hope those instructions are clear enough. What you want, is Auto Detect Modem. I've had to play around with that several times myself.

Basically, a trial and error experience. lol
