i have windows 98 se. when shutting down, the screen "greys-out" and the computer makes all the appropriate noise but then i'm left looking at bright wallpaper and just the pointer (no icons or toolbar) for about 20 seconds before the system finally shuts down.
i installed the "win 98 shutdown update" with no change in the symptoms.
ideas? thanks.

Your description of the screen fits both of my Win98SE machines. The 20 seconds does seem a bit long but not excessive. It probably is because of some software or driver being unloaded and can be hard to find.

Just think of all the processes that are going on..
when you shut down they all have to be shut down does the computer boot up in 20 sec NO...
also if you are still connected to the net it has to log off and disconnect...
I shut down all the time while still connected to the net and it takes a little longer....
Thanks
Mac!!!
This Is just my opinion
So if it stinks wait for another one
Cause I'm no expert

Maybe you should run "End it all" before you shut down WIN98 SE. It's very useful and closes all running programs you have preselected immediately. Do a Google search to find a site for download. It's freeware.
