My mate's modem will not work - but I found that in the BIOS setup (when u 1st turn on computer), the modem is set to work using IRQ 10.
When u load up Windows, and goto modem setup, Windows tells me the MODEM is using IRQ 4.
HOW DO I CHANGE WINDOWS TO USE THE MODEM WITH IRQ 10, not 4 ?
cheers geezas
ps - the BIOS setup will not let me change the MODEM IRQ to 4, that is why it is on 10

Windows detects the modem via it's own plug-n-play bios. When you boot the bios (cmos) on the motherboard creates a "list" of hardware it detects. This list houses the irq's/serial (com) ports assigned by the bios. Then windows loads and checks the bios list to see what's been assigned and whats been enabled/disabled. Windows then creates it's own plug-n-play bios list based on it's own detection, resource requirements and the motherboard bios list. It also matches up it's final list with the "hardware" contents already listed in the registry.
You can try an disable plug-n-play in the bios to see if windows will reassign accordingly.
Verify that the modem is communicating with windows via Control Panel/modems/Diagnostics tab/more info.. button. You should receive applicable AT command responses.
Also, Go to control panel/system/device manager/properties button. Any other hardware using IRQ 10 or 4?
Has the modem ever worked? How about moving the modem to a different pci slot.
what com port is the modem assigned too? check in Control panel/system/device manager.
Double click on the modem entry and select the modem tab.
are the correct modem drivers loaded or were the drivers selected from the default windows hardware manufacturer list?
Let us know how you go..
