Is there any way to change the icons beside a file name in windows explorer?

There's two default ways to do it.
1. To change the file type icon..
Open My Computer/View on the menu/Folder Options/File Types tab. Scroll to the desired file type and then select Edit then change icon button.
2. Create a shortcut from the designated file then right click on the shortcut, select properties then change icon button.

What if it is an .exe file? Is it possible to change the icon for it. The one in question is for Microsoft Comic Chat.

Go with #2 and then browse to the windows\system folder (first, make sure hidden/system files are actively seen via My Computer/view on the menu/folder options/view tab) and select shell32.dll or pifmgr.dll
you can also access additional icons via the moricons.dll file in the windows folder.
